The Hall Light Has Been Out A Year

The bulb in your hallway went out last October.

Somebody meant to replace it that week. There was a spare in a drawer, or there was not, and the shops were shut, and then it was the weekend, and then it was fine because the light from the kitchen reaches most of the way down.

That was eleven months ago.

Nobody in the house calls it dark. When people talk about that hallway they say it is a bit gloomy, or they say the light in this house is not great, which is a sentence about a house rather than a sentence about a bulb. And nobody has to say anything, because everybody adjusted. Hands find the wall. Feet know the third step. A visitor squints and says nothing, because a visitor is polite.

Here is the thing that makes this worth an article. Nobody chose to live dimmer. There was no decision. There was one small unreplaced thing, and then eleven months, and now the dark is the color of the room.

Not knowing how to reach it, or not knowing which bulb, or simply never having a moment when the thought and a chair arrived together, is not a character flaw. It never was.

Not under a bushel

There is a line in Matthew that people usually hear as an instruction about boldness, and I want to look at the ordinary household detail sitting inside it.

Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. (Matthew 5:15, King James Version)

Notice the last clause, because it is the practical one. It giveth light unto all that are in the house. Not to the person carrying it. To everybody in the building.

That is how light works in a home. It is never a private thing. One bulb on a landing is not for one person. It is for whoever comes down at six in the morning, and whoever comes in at eleven at night, and the child who is a little afraid of that corner and has never mentioned it.

You have been given light as a household thing rather than a personal one, and a dim hallway has never once meant that the people living in it stopped caring. Matthew 5:15 puts the candle where it serves everybody in the house, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that read as a kindness and not as a rebuke.

And there is something else in the verse worth catching. The problem it names is not an unlit candle. It is a lit one that ended up in the wrong place. The light was there the whole time. It got covered.

You are living in a house where the light exists and has simply been left covered, and a bulb in a drawer has never once been a judgment on anybody. The Spirit of God is the one who turns a small overlooked thing back into a possibility, and it is written in Matthew that the fix was never to make new light but to put the light where it belongs.

How the dark crept

I want to explain the creeping, because understanding it takes the shame off.

Your eyes are extraordinary at adapting. Take a person from bright sunshine into a dim room and they are blind for thirty seconds. Take the same person and reduce the light by two percent a month, and they will never once notice it happening, and after a year they will be operating at a level they would have called unacceptable if it had arrived all at once.

That is exactly what a house does. The hall bulb goes. Then the one over the stove. Then the lamp in the corner that had a loose connection. None of them on the same day, and none of them big enough to prompt anybody to act.

And each time, the household compensates, and the compensating works, and the working is the reason nobody acts.

You have a home that has been dimming by inches rather than a household that gave up, and eleven months of a dark landing has never once been evidence about the people who live there. It is written in Matthew 5:15 that the light was meant to reach everyone under that roof, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person the small nerve required to go and look in a drawer.

Now the limit, and I am going to say it in the body where you are standing rather than in a footer. A bulb in a lamp or a fitting you can reach from the floor or a step stool is yours. But never mains wiring, never the breaker panel, never a fitting with scorching or a burning smell, never anything that needs a real ladder. Call a licensed electrician for those and pay them properly. If a bulb blows repeatedly in the same fitting, that is not a bulb problem and it is a call, not a job.

That is not caution for the sake of it. That is the one place on this whole site where I will not be talked round.

One bulb, tonight

So here is the ask, and it is very small on purpose.

Find the light that has been out the longest. Not all of them. The oldest one.

Go and look at the drawer, the cupboard, the box in the garage where spares live in your house. If there is one that fits, put it in tonight. If there is not, take a photograph of the old bulb's base with your phone, so that the next time you are near a store you are not standing in an aisle guessing.

You are entirely capable of finding one bulb and standing on one step, and a five minute job has never once been beneath the notice of the God who counts hairs. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes a small ordinary act feel like the beginning of something, and Matthew 5:15 gives a whole household as the reason one small light is worth putting right.

Then switch it on and stand in the hallway for a moment with it lit.

That part is not sentimental. It is the point. Your eyes have been calibrated to the dim version for eleven months, and standing in the newly lit version for thirty seconds is what resets what you think normal looks like. That reset is worth more than the bulb.

You have been handed one small thing that changes what a whole household can see, and a single fitting has never once been too small a thing for God to be in. Scripture puts the light on the stand precisely so that everyone in the building gets it, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is with you at the bottom of those stairs.
