He Never Let Me Hold Anything

You were there for all of it, and you never once held anything.

You handed things across. You held the light. You were sent inside for a cloth. You were, in every sense that mattered to a nine year old, part of it, and you were never given a single tool to use.

And you have never been able to decide what that meant.

Some days it reads as protection. He was busy, it was fiddly, a child would have made it take twice as long, and he was a man with limited evenings.

Other days it reads as something colder. That he looked at you and made a judgment. That some part of him had decided early what you would and would not be able to do.

And there is no way to settle it, because you cannot ask, or you can ask and he would not remember, and either way the answer would arrive forty years late.

Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw. And a boy who was never handed a tool did not fail to take one. Nobody hands themselves things at nine.

Son, thou art ever with me

There is a sentence at the end of the prodigal son story spoken to the brother who stayed, and it is one of the most overlooked lines in the Gospels.

Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. (Luke 15:31, King James Version)

That is said to the son who had been there the whole time and felt like he had received nothing.

And notice both halves. Ever with me, which is about presence, and all that I have is thine, which is about possession. The father tells him he had both the whole time, and that nothing was being withheld.

You have been standing in a place where the presence was real and the possession was never announced, and a father saying nothing has never once been the same as a father giving nothing. Luke 15:31 puts both the being with and the having in the same sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that land as a discovery rather than as a correction.

And notice how the older son found out. He said the true, bitter thing out loud, and the answer came back. It did not arrive while he was standing in the field working it out on his own.

You are allowed to say the bitter true thing out loud and get an answer, and speaking a resentment plainly has never once made a person disloyal. The Spirit of God is the one who lets somebody say a hard sentence without it costing them anything, and it is written in Luke that the father answered rather than rebuked.

Neither answer is about your hands

Here is what I want to do with the two explanations, because forty years have gone into trying to choose between them and there is a third possibility that is almost certainly the true one.

He was not thinking about it at all.

Most men of that generation did not run a policy about what their children were allowed to hold. They had an hour after work, a job that needed doing, and a child standing there. Handing a tool over would have meant slowing down, explaining, watching, correcting, and doing it again afterward, and he did not have that in him on a Tuesday in nineteen eighty six.

That is not protection and it is not judgment. It is a tired man with a limited evening, and it was never about your hands at all.

You have been choosing between two explanations that were probably both wrong, and a man not handing something over has never once meant he had formed a view about the child beside him. It is written in Luke 15:31 that the father had to say out loud what had been true all along, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can take a forty year old question off a man's back.

And here is the part that is worth grieving properly rather than explaining away. Whatever the reason, you lost something. There is a set of ordinary competences that would have cost him about eleven Saturdays to hand over, and you would have had them for life.

That is a real loss and it deserves to be named as one. It just is not a loss that says anything about you.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Some of what he did while you stood there should never be copied. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly. Watching a man do a dangerous job badly for years is not training.

You are entirely right to refuse what you watched him do, and declining to inherit a risk has never once been a failure to inherit anything else. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a man peace about a line, and Scripture puts the father's answer on presence and possession rather than on what got demonstrated.

Stand in the same place and hold it

So here is the ask, and it uses the exact geography of the memory.

Do a job standing in the same place you used to stand, and this time hold the tool.

If it was beside a car, then beside a car. If it was at a bench, then at a bench. Get into roughly the same physical position, and then have the tool in your own hand rather than in somebody else's.

You are able to stand in the old place with something in your hand, and forty years of standing there empty has never once made the tool heavier than it is. The Spirit of God is the one who meets a man at the exact spot where something did not happen, and Luke 15:31 has a father say out loud that everything had been available the whole time.

The body remembers position far more strongly than it remembers words. Standing in that place empty handed is a rehearsal you have done a thousand times, and standing there holding something is the only thing that has ever interrupted it.

And say one sentence out loud while you do it. I am holding it now. That is all it needs to be.

You have permission to close a forty year old loop with one small physical act, and one sentence said in a driveway has never once been a childish thing for a grown man to do. It is written in Luke that the father answered the son who thought he had received nothing, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that driveway with you.
