The Job Nobody SeesHaggai 1:4

The Door Has Never Shut Right

This message is for the man who has a particular way of closing a door that does not close, has taught that way to his children without meaning to, and has never once counted it as broken

Your daughter closes the door the same way you do.

She lifts the handle a half inch, leans her shoulder into the top corner, and pulls. She has never been told to do that. She has never thought about it. She learned it the way children learn where the light switch is, by watching an adult and copying without asking any questions.

That door has not shut properly since before she could walk.

And here is the part that is worth sitting with for a minute. In nine years, nobody in that house has ever once said the words the door is broken. Not you, not your wife, not one of the children. The sentence has never been spoken, because the door has not been broken in a very long time. The door has been normal.

That is what happens to a fault that lasts. It stops being a fault and becomes a feature of the house, and then it becomes a feature of the family, and then it gets handed to the next generation as a small piece of unspoken knowledge.

I want to say clearly, before anything else, that this says nothing about the kind of man you are. Nobody ever taught most of us to notice this. A missing skill and a missing character are two entirely different things, and I am not going to let them sit in the same sentence.

The Door Has Never Shut Right

Consider your ways

There is a short book near the end of the Old Testament where God says something that sounds almost gentle and lands like a hand on the shoulder.

Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste? Now therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts; Consider your ways. (Haggai 1:4, King James Version)

I want to be honest about what that passage is about, because I am not going to make a verse say something it does not say. Haggai is speaking about the temple. The people had come back from exile, they had built their own homes and settled into them, and the house of God sat in ruins while ordinary life went on around it perfectly comfortably.

The thing I am drawing on is the mechanic underneath it, and the mechanic is exact. A ruin that stays long enough stops being seen. Nobody in Jerusalem was walking past those stones every morning thinking about them. They had gone quiet. And God's remedy is not a lecture and not a punishment. It is four words. Consider your ways.

You have been handed a look rather than a scolding, and God asking a man to consider his own house has never once been the same as God being disappointed in him. Haggai 1:5 says consider your ways, spoken to people who were not rebels but were simply used to something, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that four word sentence feel like an invitation instead of an accusation.

Consider is a looking word. It is not a doing word. Before one nail went back into that temple, the prophet asked a whole city to notice where they actually were.

You are able to consider a door for thirty seconds without that door becoming a statement about you, and a hinge that dropped nine years ago has never once been the measure of a father. The Spirit of God is the one who separates a fact from a verdict in a man's chest, and it is written in Haggai that the looking came before any building at all.

What the lifting cost you

Let me tell you what I think the lifting actually costs, because it is not the door.

Every time a person compensates for something, a small piece of attention goes out of them and does not come back. It is tiny. It is a half second and an adjustment. But it happens eleven times a day for nine years, and underneath it sits a quiet sentence that never gets said out loud, which is roughly: this is the kind of house I have, and this is the kind of man I am.

That sentence is the expensive part. Not the hinge.

And your children now carry the same sentence in their hands. They will lift a handle in their own houses one day without knowing why, and if you asked them, they could not tell you where they learned it.

You have not passed on a failure to your children, you have passed on a workaround, and a workaround has never once been a curse on a family. It is written in Haggai that God begins with consider and not with condemn, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is going to let you look at that doorway tonight without your chest going tight.

Now, the limit, and I want to say it plainly rather than leave it to the bottom of the page. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall that is holding the building up, never a roof, never a ladder past a step stool. Call a licensed professional for those and pay them properly. That is not a shameful sentence. That is a man who knows the edge of his own competence, which is a form of skill and not the absence of one.

A door is not on that list. A door is a hinge, three screws and a screwdriver.

Where it actually catches

Here is what most people never do with a door that sticks, and it takes about forty seconds.

Open it all the way. Then close it slowly, at the speed of somebody watching rather than somebody arriving, and keep your eyes on the gap between the door and the frame the whole way.

You are perfectly capable of watching a door close slowly, and forty seconds of honest attention has never once been beyond anybody. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes a small deliberate look into the start of something, and Haggai 1:5 puts exactly that kind of look in front of a whole city before anybody lifts a stone.

You are looking for one thing only. Where does it touch first. Top corner, bottom corner, the latch not lining up with the plate. That is it. Three possibilities, and the door tells you which one within about two seconds of honest watching.

Most of the time it is the top hinge, and the screws in it have worked loose over years of weight, and the whole repair is a screwdriver and four minutes.

Sometimes it is the strike plate, the metal piece on the frame, and the whole repair is loosening two screws and moving it a hair.

Sometimes it has swelled, and that is a different conversation and a different day, and even then it is sandpaper and not surgery.

You have been standing on the near side of a four minute job for nine years, and nine years of not knowing which screw has never once meant anything about your worth. Scripture records God telling ordinary people to consider before He tells them to build, and the same Spirit who said that through a prophet is standing in the hallway with you.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being said over a man standing in his own hallway tonight.

You have never once been the kind of man who does not care about his own house, and a door you learned to lift is not evidence against you. I am not going to hand you a renovation and I am not going to hand you a verdict on nine years. Haggai 1:4 speaks to people who had built good homes and had stopped seeing one ruined thing, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is with you in that doorway.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have the hands, the screwdriver and the forty seconds this needs, and a fault that outlasted your children's childhood has never once been stronger than the God who says consider. The written word puts a look before a build every single time, and the Spirit of God is the one who is going to be there when the door closes properly and your daughter's face changes.

Open it. Close it slowly. Watch where it touches.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Door that has never shut right, you are one loose hinge and you were never a report on the man who lives here. Haggai 1:4 has God ask a people to consider a thing they had stopped seeing, so by the Holy Spirit I open you and close you slowly tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Voice that says a real man would have known, you have no claim on a father with a screwdriver in his hand. The written word puts consider before build in every single case, and by the Spirit of God I am done reading nine years of lifting a handle as a fact about me.
  3. Father, You did not shout at a city that had settled comfortably beside a ruin. You said consider your ways, and Your word records that four word sentence before one stone moved, so by Your Spirit I go and watch that door close tonight, and I teach my children something different with my hands.
