The list is real. It has just never been anywhere except inside you.
It runs while you are doing the dishes. It runs in the car. It runs at ten past three in the morning, which is the hour it likes best, and it does not run in order, and it never gets shorter.
The closet rail. The bulb over the stove. The thing in the bathroom. The drawer. The screen door. The thing you cannot quite bring to mind right now, which is the worst one, because a job you cannot name is a job you cannot ever finish.
And here is the property of that list that costs the most. Nothing on it can be crossed off. You can do a job, and the doing is real, but there is nothing to strike a line through, so the weight does not go down. You have been doing the work and never once getting the relief.
That is not disorganization and it is not a character flaw. Nobody ever taught most of us that a house needs a page. A missing habit is not a missing person, and I am not going to let those two sit in the same sentence.

Write the vision, make it plain
There is a moment in Habakkuk where a man is carrying something enormous, and God's answer to him begins with an instruction about writing.
And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. (Habakkuk 2:2, King James Version)
I want you to see how practical that is. God does not say think about it more carefully. He does not say pray harder about it. He says write it, and make it plain, and make it plain enough that a person going past at speed can take it in.
Habakkuk's burden is far bigger than a house, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. But the mechanic God hands him is exactly the one you need tonight, and it is not a coincidence that the first move is to get the thing out of a person's head and onto a surface.
You have been handed the same first instruction God gave a prophet with a load on him, and getting something out of your head onto a page has never once been a small or unspiritual act. Habakkuk 2:2 begins with write and not with try harder, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a plain page feel like relief rather than like an indictment.
Notice the phrase make it plain. Not make it beautiful, not make it complete, not make it a system. Plain. Legible at a glance, by somebody moving.
You are allowed to make this plain rather than perfect, and a list scrawled on the back of an envelope has never once been beneath the dignity of what God asked for. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the shame out of ordinary paper, and it is written in Habakkuk that the whole point of the writing was that a person could take it in while running.
Why the head is the worst container
Let me be plain about what a list in your head actually does, because most people have lived with the effect for years and nobody ever named the cause.
An unwritten job cannot be finished, because there is nowhere for the finishing to land. So your mind keeps the item live. That is not a defect. That is a memory system doing exactly its job, which is to keep rehearsing anything that has not been closed out.
Which means the list has to be reviewed constantly, and there is no natural moment to stop reviewing it, and so it turns up at ten past three.
You have a mind that has been faithfully protecting you by rehearsing every open thing, and a head that will not stop listing has never once meant that something is wrong with you. It is written in Habakkuk 2:2 that the answer to a heavy burden began with a surface and a pen, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can hand a woman permission to put a load down onto a table.
There is a second cost, and it is quieter. An unwritten list grows in the dark. Items get bigger between visits. The drawer becomes the whole kitchen. The closet rail becomes a job that would take a Saturday, and when it is finally written down and looked at properly, it is nine minutes and one screw.
Now the limit, and I am saying it here rather than in a footer. Some of what goes on that page is not yours to do. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Write those on the page too, in their own column, and call a licensed professional when the money is there. Knowing which column a job belongs in is a real skill, and it is one of the things a page gives you that a head never can.
One page, all of it, tonight
So here is the ask, and it is one piece of paper.
Sit down with a single sheet and write every job in this house on it. All of them. Not the important ones. All of them, including the ones that feel too small to write and the ones that feel too big to look at.
You are allowed to write it without deciding anything about it, and one page filled in eleven minutes has never once obligated the woman who wrote it to do a single thing tonight. The Spirit of God is the one who lets a person set something down without immediately picking it back up, and Habakkuk 2:2 asks for a plain surface first and never for a finished plan.
Do not sort them. Do not put them in order. Do not decide anything about any of them tonight. Just get them out.
You are able to fill one page with the contents of your own head, and putting a burden onto a table has never once been beyond the strength of anybody God has spoken to. The Holy Spirit is the one who goes with a woman while she empties something out, and Habakkuk 2:2 makes the writing itself the first act of obedience and not the second.
Two things will happen and you should know about them in advance.
The first is that the page will be shorter than the feeling. It almost always is. What has been running at three in the morning as a fog turns out to be eleven items, and eleven is a number, and numbers can be looked at.
The second is that some of them will be four minute jobs, and seeing them written beside a genuinely big one will show you the difference for the first time in years.
You have permission to find out that this is eleven things and not a hundred, and the true size of a load has never once been able to harm the person who finally looked at it. Scripture puts the making plain right at the front so that a person can take it in at speed, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is sitting at the table with you.
So here is what I believe is being spoken over a woman standing in her own kitchen tonight with a running list and no paper.
You have been carrying this house in your head, and a list nobody ever wrote down has never once been a measure of how much you care. I am not handing you a system and I am not handing you a verdict on six years. Habakkuk 2:2 answers a heavy man with write it and make it plain, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is standing in this kitchen with you.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have a God whose first instruction to a person under a load was to get it out of themselves and onto a surface, and a list that has never been written has never once been stronger than a woman with one sheet of paper. The written word makes plain and not perfect the whole requirement, and the Spirit of God is the one who is going to be there while the page fills up.
One page. All of it. No sorting.
Declare this over yourself
- List that runs at ten past three, you are real and you are eleven items, and you were never once a measure of the woman carrying you. Habakkuk 2:2 says write the vision and make it plain, so by the Holy Spirit I put you on one page tonight, in the name of Jesus.
- Dread that grows in the dark between visits, you have no claim on a table with a pen on it. The written word makes plainness the requirement rather than perfection, and by the Spirit of God I am done keeping this house inside my own head.
- Father, You answered a man under a heavy load by telling him to write it and make it legible to somebody running past. Your word says it in Habakkuk, so by Your Spirit I fill one page tonight, and I let this house be a number I can look at.
