I Am Waiting For The Right Day

There are three things, and they have to arrive together.

Enough time, which means a Saturday with nothing in it. The right mood, which means not tired and not flat and not already annoyed about something else. And the correct tool, which you would have to go and get.

Any two of those show up fairly often. All three have not shown up in two years.

And because the plan sounds so reasonable, nobody has ever questioned it, including you. Waiting for a good day to do a job is what sensible people do. It does not look like avoidance from the inside and it does not look like avoidance from the outside either.

But two years is not waiting any more. Somewhere in there it stopped being a delay and became a decision, and nobody in the house noticed it happening, and there was never a moment you could point at.

Before anything else, let me put this down. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and neither is wanting decent conditions before you start something. Both of those are ordinary and neither one is a fact about your character.

Ye know not what shall be on the morrow

There is a passage in James about planning that is far gentler than the way it usually gets read.

Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. (James 4:14, King James Version)

People hear that as a warning about arrogance, and there is some of that in the chapter. But the plain observation inside it is simply true, and it is the useful part tonight.

You do not know what tomorrow holds. Which means the free Saturday you are waiting for is not a thing that exists yet. It is a picture of a day that has not been made.

You have been arranging your work around a day that does not exist, and waiting for a future Saturday has never once been the same as having a plan. James 4:14 says plainly that nobody knows what tomorrow holds, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as freedom to act now rather than as a rebuke about presumption.

And there is a kindness in the passage that people miss. James does not tell them to stop planning. He tells them to hold the plan inside the will of God, which is a way of saying: act, and hold it loosely.

You are allowed to act inside today rather than inside a day you are imagining, and the day you actually have has never once been the wrong day to start. The Spirit of God is the one who gives a person permission to work in ordinary conditions, and it is written in James that the little time is now and not later.

What the three conditions are actually protecting

Here is the part worth understanding, because the conditions are not really about time or tools.

Each of the three is a way of guaranteeing that if it goes badly, there will be an explanation. Given a whole Saturday, and the right tool, and a good frame of mind, a crooked result would belong to nobody but the person who made it.

The conditions are keeping the result deniable. As long as they have never all arrived, the job has never truly been attempted, and nothing has been found out about your hands.

That is not cowardice. That is an extremely common piece of protection, and most people run some version of it about something.

You have been protecting yourself with a set of conditions rather than preparing with them, and needing the result to stay deniable has never once meant that you could not do the job. It is written in James 4:14 that tomorrow is not something anybody holds, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can make a person willing to find out.

And here is the mathematics of it, which is uncomfortable and useful. The odds of all three arriving on the same day have not improved in two years and will not. So the choice was never between doing it well later and doing it badly now. It was between doing it badly now and never doing it.

Now the limit, and I say it in the body rather than in a footer. There are jobs where waiting for the right conditions is exactly correct, and those are the ones that belong to somebody else. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly. Waiting to afford that is not the same trap at all.

You are entirely right to wait for money to do a dangerous job properly, and knowing which waiting is wisdom has never once been the same as the waiting that empties a house. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person clarity between the two, and Scripture puts the acting inside today rather than inside an imagined tomorrow.

Twenty minutes, wrong mood, wrong tool

So here is the ask, and every part of it is deliberately wrong.

Do it tonight, in whatever mood the evening actually brought, with whatever tool is already in the drawer, for twenty minutes.

Not a Saturday. Tonight. Not the correct tool. The nearly right one already in the drawer. Not a good frame of mind. This one, whatever it is.

You are able to work for twenty minutes in an ordinary mood with the wrong tool, and imperfect conditions have never once produced a worse result than perfect conditions that did not arrive. The Spirit of God is the one who meets a person in the day they actually have, and James 4:14 says plainly that nobody holds tomorrow.

Set a timer if that helps. Twenty minutes, and when it goes off you are allowed to stop wherever you are, even in the middle, even with the thing half apart.

That permission is the whole design. What has been stopping you is not the twenty minutes. It is the belief that starting means committing to a finished result tonight, and it does not.

You have permission to stop in the middle and leave it there, and half a job left standing has never once been worse than a job never begun. It is written in James that life appears for a little time and then is gone, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in the room with you.
