I Have Finished Nothing And I Belong Here

There are about a dozen things in that house that are started and not finished.

The room with one wall painted. The shelf up and unfilled. The floor half done. The door that came off and is leaning behind another door. The trim that stops. The light with no shade on it.

And underneath all of it is a sentence you have never said out loud, which goes roughly: when this is all done, it will feel like ours.

That sentence has been running for six years. And every time one job gets finished, another one starts, because that is what houses do, and the day when it is all done has not arrived and is not going to.

So you have been living in a waiting room that happens to be your house.

Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and neither is having a dozen unfinished things. A man who starts twelve jobs is a man who has put his hands on his own house twelve times, and that is not the profile of somebody who does not care.

Not as though I had already attained

There is a sentence from Paul that is unusually blunt about his own state, and the useful part is when he says it.

Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after. (Philippians 3:12, King James Version)

Paul writes that late in his life, after most of what he is remembered for.

He is not saying it as a young man at the start of something. He is saying it as somebody who could have claimed a great deal, and what he says is that he has not arrived, and that he is still going.

You have an example of somebody naming himself unfinished without treating it as a failure, and being partway through has never once been a lesser state than being complete. Philippians 3:12 has a man say plainly that he has not attained and is still following after, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as normal rather than as an admission.

And notice what he does not do. He does not wait to be finished before living. The verse is written from inside the unfinished state and it is not written as a complaint.

You are allowed to live fully in a house that is not done, and an unfinished thing has never once had to be completed before somebody could belong in it. The Spirit of God is the one who lets a person occupy a middle without treating it as a hallway, and it is written in Philippians that the man who had done the most said plainly that he was not there yet.

The finish line was never real

Here is the arithmetic that ends this, and it is worth doing out loud.

A house of that age needs roughly one thing a month, forever. That is not a failure of maintenance. That is the standing condition of every house that anybody has ever lived in.

Which means the state being waited for, in which everything is done at the same time, has never existed in that house and never will. Not for you and not for anybody who ever lives there after you.

So the condition you attached your belonging to is not a hard condition. It is an impossible one, and you have been holding your own arrival hostage to it for six years.

You have been waiting for a state that has never existed in any house, and a dozen unfinished jobs has never once been the thing standing between a man and his own home. It is written in Philippians 3:12 that a man late in his life said plainly he had not arrived, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes an impossible condition off a person quietly.

And here is what is worth seeing about those twelve. Every one of them is evidence.

Somebody painted that wall. Somebody put that shelf up. Somebody took that door off with a plan. Twelve times, a man in this house decided something needed doing and went and got a tool.

A house with twelve half done jobs in it has been more worked on than most houses on that street.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Some of the dozen are not yours and never were, and those are not unfinished, they are waiting for somebody. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly.

You are entirely right to have some of that list belong to somebody licensed, and a job that is waiting for a professional has never once counted as one of your unfinished ones. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a man peace about that, and Scripture has the man who had done the most say openly that he was still following after.

Sit in the unfinished room

So here is the ask, and it is going to feel wrong, which is how you know it is the right one.

Sit down in the most unfinished room in the house for ten minutes and do nothing.

The one with the half painted wall, or the tools still in it, or the floor that stops. Carry a chair in if there is nowhere to sit. Take a drink in with you.

You are able to sit in an unfinished room without working in it, and ten minutes of simply being somewhere has never once been a waste of an evening. The Spirit of God is the one who meets a person in the middle of something rather than at the end of it, and Philippians 3:12 is written from inside an unfinished state and not from beyond one.

And do nothing. That is the instruction and it is the whole of it. Do not assess. Do not plan. Do not pick anything up or move anything to the side or work out what the next step would be.

Just be in there for ten minutes, in a room that is not done, without treating that as a problem to be solved.

Here is what is being tested. Whether it is possible to be at home in this house before the house is finished. And there is only one way to find that out, and it is not by finishing anything.

You have permission to belong here tonight rather than at the end of a list, and ten minutes in a half painted room has never once been a smaller act than a finished one. It is written in Philippians that a man said plainly he had not attained and was still going, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that room with you.
