He Did It A Way Nobody Explained

He never explained anything, and he never hid anything either.

That is the strange shape of it. You were there. You were in the yard, in the garage, under the house with him, handing things across, for eighteen years. He did not send you away. He did not lock the door.

He simply did not talk.

He knew where to put his hands and he put them there. He knew which way it turned and he turned it. He knew when something was going to be a problem and his face changed about four seconds before it happened. And none of that came with a single sentence attached.

So you have watched a thousand hours of a master at work and you cannot reproduce one step of it. And the conclusion most people draw from that is savage: he could do it and I cannot, so the difference must be in me.

That conclusion is wrong, and I want it dealt with before we go anywhere else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw. What you are missing is not ability. It is words, and words were never in the room.

Train up a child in the way

There is a proverb about handing things on, and it gets used as a weapon far more often than it gets read.

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6, King James Version)

I want to be careful with this one, because it is regularly turned into a hammer for hitting parents with, and I am not going to do that to your father tonight.

Look at what the verse actually names. A way. Not a technique, not a curriculum, not a list of household skills. A way is a direction and a manner of going, and it can be handed on entirely without words.

You were trained in a way even though nobody handed you the words, and a silent training has never once been the same as nothing being given. Proverbs 22:6 puts the training on a way rather than on a set of instructions, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person see what they did receive before they count what they did not.

Think about what actually came across in that garage. That work is finished properly. That you do not leave a thing half done. That being present matters. That you show up. Every one of those arrived without a sentence, and every one of them is in you now.

You have been carrying something he did hand over, and the absence of instructions has never once meant the absence of an inheritance. The Spirit of God is the one who can show a son what he actually received, and it is written in Proverbs that what gets trained into a person is a way and not a technique.

Watching is not learning

Here is the mechanism, and it is not personal at all.

Watching somebody do a skill activates almost nothing in the part of you that would need to do it. It feels like learning. It is not learning. The hands learn by doing and by being corrected, and correction requires language, and language was the one thing missing.

That is why you can picture his hands perfectly and cannot make yours do it. You have a high definition memory of a performance and no instructions.

You have a memory of a master and no manual, and having watched without being told has never once meant that your hands are the wrong hands. It is written in Proverbs 22:6 that training is what forms a person, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can supply now what silence left out then.

And here is what I would say about him, and it matters. He almost certainly could not have explained it. Men who were taught the same way he was do not have the words either. They have hands. Asking him to narrate would have been asking him for something nobody ever gave him.

That is not a defense of the silence. It is an explanation, and the difference between the two is that an explanation lets you stop building a case about yourself.

Now the limit, and I put it plainly here. Some of what he did should not be copied. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. He may well have done some of those himself, and it still does not make them yours. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly.

You are entirely allowed to do less than he did and still be his son, and refusing a dangerous job has never once been a failure to inherit. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a man peace about a line, and Scripture puts the whole weight on the way a person walks rather than on the list of things they can do.

Narrate it out loud

So here is the ask, and it supplies the exact thing that was missing.

Do one step of one of his jobs, and say out loud what your hands are doing while they do it.

I am holding the screwdriver. I am putting it in the top screw. I am turning it toward me. It is not moving. I am pushing harder while I turn.

You are able to give yourself the words nobody gave you, and narrating your own hands out loud has never once been a childish way for a grown man to learn. The Spirit of God is the one who meets a man in the gap another man left, and Proverbs 22:6 names the training of a way as the thing that stays in a person.

It sounds ridiculous. Do it anyway, because it works, and it works for a reason. Speaking a movement out loud forces it apart into steps, and steps can be remembered, adjusted and repeated. That is precisely what watching never did.

And there is a second effect that matters more than the first. When you say it out loud in the room, you are doing the thing your father could not do. Which means if there is a child in that house, they are hearing it, and the silence stops with you.

You have permission to be the one who breaks a silence that came down three generations, and being the first man in a family to narrate a job has never once been a criticism of the ones who came before. It is written in Proverbs that a way is what gets trained into a person, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in the garage with you.
