If you fix it now, everybody will know it was broken.
That is the sentence, and almost nobody says it out loud, and it is running underneath a great many houses.
Because a thing that has been wrong for nine years is not a repair job any more. It has become a record. And picking up a screwdriver in front of your family would not read as a man doing a small job. It would read as an announcement: I knew about this for nine years, and I could have done it in four minutes at any point, and I did not.
So the screwdriver stays in the drawer. Not because the job is hard. Because the job would speak.
I want to put something down at the very start of this. Not knowing how to begin something you have let stand is not a character flaw. There is no version of a man's worth that gets measured in hinges, and I am not going to let a nine year old cabinet door say one word about who you are.

When I kept silence
There is a verse in Psalm 32 that describes what silence costs, and it is one of the most physically honest lines in the Bible.
When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. (Psalm 32:3, King James Version)
Look at what is happening in that sentence. On the outside, silence. On the inside, roaring. All day long. The man is saying nothing at all and there is a noise going on inside him that never stops.
The psalm is about sin and confession, and I am not going to pretend it is about a cabinet door. But the mechanic underneath it is exactly the one working in your hallway, and God put it in the book because it is true of people: a thing held in silence does not go quiet. It gets louder, and it costs the body.
You have been carrying a small silence that has been making a great deal of noise, and holding something in has never once been the same as being guilty of something. Psalm 32:3 names the roaring that goes on inside a person who is saying nothing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that verse land as sympathy rather than as an accusation.
And notice how the psalm goes on. There is no punishment waiting on the other side of the silence breaking. There is relief. The whole weight of that psalm is that the dreaded moment turns out to be the moment the load comes off.
You are standing in front of a moment you have been dreading for nine years, and Scripture has never once recorded that moment turning out to be the disaster the silence promised. The Spirit of God is the one who goes first into a thing a person has been avoiding, and it is written in Psalm 32 that what followed the speaking was lightness and not condemnation.
Nobody is keeping the record you think they are
Here is the part I most want you to hear, and it is about the people in your house.
They are not keeping score on that door. I know the sentence in your head says they are. But a family does not maintain a ledger of a man's unfixed jobs. They stopped seeing it years before you did, because they adjusted, and adjusting makes things invisible.
The only person in that house maintaining a nine year record is you.
You have been the sole keeper of a record that nobody else in the building is holding, and a private ledger has never once been the same as a fact about a man. It is written in Psalm 32:3 that the roaring was inside the man and not in the room around him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can quiet an inner noise that has been running for years.
And if somebody in the house does notice, here is what actually happens on the day. They say, oh, you fixed that. And you say yes. And that is the entire event. It lasts four seconds. The confession you have been avoiding for nine years is four seconds long, and it is not even a confession, it is a remark about a door.
Now the limit, and I say it plainly here rather than at the bottom. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall that holds the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional for those and pay them what they ask. There is no shame in a job that belongs to somebody licensed, and there never was.
But a cabinet door, a handle, a hinge, a drawer runner, a strip of trim. Those are yours, and they are minutes rather than hours.
Do it while nobody is home
So here is the practical move, and it is designed around the actual obstacle rather than the imaginary one.
Do it when the house is empty.
I am serious about that. If the thing standing between you and a four minute job is being watched while you do it, then remove the watching. That is not cowardice. That is solving the real problem instead of the one you wish you had.
You are allowed to remove the audience rather than conquer the fear of it, and doing something quietly has never once made it less real. The Holy Spirit is the one who meets a man where he actually is instead of where he thinks he should be, and Psalm 32:3 describes the inside of a person accurately without one word of contempt for him.
Pick the oldest small thing. Not the biggest. The oldest. The one with the most years attached, because the years are what is making it heavy, and the years are exactly what comes off.
Do it. Put the screwdriver away. Say nothing to anybody.
You have permission to fix something without announcing it, and a repair done in an empty house has never once counted less than one done in front of an audience. Scripture puts the roaring inside the man and the relief on the far side of one moment, and the same Spirit who breathed that psalm is standing in the hallway with you.
So here is what I believe is being said over a man standing in his own hallway tonight.
You have been kept out of a four minute job by a confession you never owed anybody, and nine years of waiting has never once been a debt against you. I am not handing you a lecture about the nine years and I am not handing you a verdict. Psalm 32:3 records a man roaring inside while saying nothing, and God put that in the book to be kind and not to be cruel, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is with you in that hallway.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have a God who put the inside of a silent man into Scripture on purpose, and a nine year old hinge has never once been stronger than six minutes and a screwdriver. The written word puts relief and not condemnation on the far side of the moment a person has been dreading, and the Spirit of God is the one who is going to be in the empty house with you.
The oldest small thing. Nobody home. Say nothing.
Declare this over yourself
- Cabinet door that has hung wrong for nine years, you are one hinge and one screw, and you were never once a record against the man who lives here. Psalm 32:3 puts the roaring inside a person and not in the room, so by the Holy Spirit I fix you this week, in the name of Jesus.
- Sentence that says fixing it now admits it, you have no claim on a man in an empty house with a screwdriver. The written word puts relief on the far side of the dreaded moment, and by the Spirit of God I am done paying nine years of interest on four minutes of work.
- Father, You wrote down what silence does to a body and You did not despise the man it was happening to. Your word says his bones waxed old while he said nothing, so by Your Spirit I go and do the oldest small thing in this house, and I let it be quiet and finished.
