There is a room in that house that nobody goes in.
It did not get closed on purpose. Nobody sat down and decided. Something went wrong in there, three or four years ago, and it was going to get sorted out, and in the meantime the door got shut. And then the shut door became the normal position of that door.
Now the family lives in four rooms instead of five. The children do not think of it as a room. It has quietly become a wall with a handle on it.
I have seen this in more houses than I can count, and it is almost never one big thing. It is a damp patch that never got looked at. It is a floor that came up. It is a room that filled with boxes after somebody died or somebody left, and opening it means dealing with what is in it, so the door stays shut and the house gets smaller.
Let me say the important thing first, before any of the practical part. Nobody ever taught most of us what to do with a room that goes wrong. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and it is not a sign of a household that does not care. It is a sign of a household that ran out of margin at exactly the wrong moment.

The restorer of paths to dwell in
There is a line in Isaiah that gives a name to a certain kind of person, and I have always thought it is one of the most beautiful job titles in the Bible.
And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in. (Isaiah 58:12, King James Version)
Read the last phrase slowly. The restorer of paths to dwell in. Not the builder of new cities. Not the architect. The one who makes a way back into a place that people had stopped being able to live in.
That is a repair word, and it is a dwelling word, and the two are joined together on purpose. The point of the repair is not the wall. The point of the repair is that somebody gets to live there again.
You have been called into a work that God Himself puts a name on, and reopening one room in your own house has never once been too small a thing for Him to call restoration. Isaiah 58:12 names the restorer of paths to dwell in as a title God hands to ordinary people, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a closed door feel like a door again rather than a wall.
Notice also what Isaiah says the person is working on. The old waste places. Not new ground. The places that had been left, that everybody had walked past for years and stopped seeing as usable at all.
You are standing beside an old waste place tonight and God has never once looked at one of those and called it finished. The Spirit of God is the one who puts the word restorer over a person who has done nothing yet, and it is written in Isaiah that the foundations being raised were foundations that had already been there.
A house that got smaller without a decision
Here is what I want you to see about the closed room, because it is not really about the room.
A family adjusts. That is the good news and the expensive news in one sentence. When something becomes unusable, the household quietly reorganizes itself around the loss, and it does that so well that within about a month nobody remembers the reorganization happening.
The dining chairs go somewhere else. The boxes that would have gone in there get stacked in a hallway. Somebody sleeps in a smaller space than they should. And nobody ever says out loud, we now live in a smaller house than the one we pay for.
That silence is the cost. Not the damp patch.
You have been paying for a room you never once decided to give up, and a house that quietly shrank has never once been a verdict on the people inside it. It is written in Isaiah that God assigns the restoring of waste places to people who are already tired, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person the nerve to put a hand on that handle tonight.
Now the limit, said plainly and not tucked into a footnote. If that room has a real damp problem coming through a wall or a ceiling, or a floor that gives underfoot, then that is where we stop. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring. That one is not yours and it is not mine. Call a licensed professional and get an honest look at it. Waiting for money to do that properly is not failure. It is sense.
But an enormous number of closed rooms are not that. They are a room full of boxes with one blown bulb, and the door has stayed shut for three years because of what it would feel like to walk in.
You are allowed to find out which of those two this actually is, and three years of not knowing has never once been a statement about the household living around that door. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes a person brave enough to check rather than to guess, and Isaiah 58:12 puts the survey of old waste places in the hands of the person who is going to live there.
Two minutes inside it
So here is what I am actually asking, and it is nothing like as big as your chest is telling you it is.
Open the door. Turn on whatever light works, or carry one in. And stand in the middle of that room for two minutes without touching anything.
That is the whole thing. Two minutes, standing up, hands empty.
You are able to stand in a room for one hundred and twenty seconds, and two minutes inside a shut door has never once been beyond the strength of anybody God has ever spoken to. The Holy Spirit is the one who goes in ahead of a person into a room they have avoided, and Isaiah 58:12 puts an ordinary human being in the middle of old waste places and calls him a restorer while he stands there.
Here is why it works. A room you have not entered in three years is not a room in your head any more. It is a feeling. It has grown in the dark the way everything does. And two minutes of standing in the actual room replaces the feeling with the facts, and the facts are almost always smaller.
You may find it is boxes and dust and one dead bulb. You may find it is a genuine job that needs a professional and a date in a calendar. Either of those is better than the wall with a handle on it.
You have permission to find out what is actually in there, and knowing the true size of a thing has never once made anybody weaker. Scripture puts the raising of foundations in the hands of people who first went and looked at what had been left, and the same Spirit who named that work is standing in the doorway with you.
So here is what I believe is being spoken over a household tonight that lives in four rooms out of five.
You have not been careless with this house, you have been closing doors to survive it, and a shut room has never once been a shut life. I am not handing you a renovation and I am not handing you a schedule. Isaiah 58:12 hands the title of restorer to people standing in front of ground that had been written off, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is with you in that hallway.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have a God who names the reopening of old places as the work He gives to His own, and a door that has been shut for three years has never once been stronger than the person holding the handle. The written word calls that person the restorer of paths to dwell in, and the Spirit of God is the one who is going to be in the room when the light goes on.
Two minutes. Standing up. Hands empty.
Declare this over yourself
- Room we stopped going in, you are four walls and some boxes, and you were never once the true size of this family's house. Isaiah 58:12 calls a plain person the restorer of paths to dwell in, so by the Holy Spirit I open you tonight and I stand in you, in the name of Jesus.
- Dread that grew behind that shut door, you have no claim on a household with a light in its hand. The written word puts God's own title on the one who goes back into an old waste place, and by the Spirit of God I am done treating a door as a wall.
- Father, You are the One who calls a tired person a repairer of the breach before they have lifted anything at all. Your word says the foundations raised are the ones already lying there, so by Your Spirit I walk into that room tonight and stand in the middle of it, and I let this house be the size You gave it.
