I Have Been Temporary Here For Nine Years

You have been about to move for nine years.

Not actively. There is no plan and there has never been a viewing. But every decision in that house has been made as though the real one is coming, and this one is what happens in the meantime.

So nothing got hung on the walls. The garden never got anything planted that takes three years. The room upstairs has never been decided about. The boxes in the loft have not been opened since the day they went up there.

And nine years have gone past inside that arrangement.

Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and neither is having hoped for something better. Wanting a different house is not a failure of gratitude, and it is not what this article is about.

The Lord hath made room for us

There is a moment in Genesis where Isaac finally stops moving, and the sentence he says is worth having.

And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the Lord hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land. (Genesis 26:22, King James Version)

Isaac had been moved on twice. He dug wells and people took them, and he moved, and dug again, and it happened again.

And then a well nobody fought him over, and he stops and names the place. Rehoboth, which means room, or broad places.

Notice the word now. For now the Lord hath made room for us. He does not say eventually. He marks the moment, out loud, and gives the place a name.

You have a picture of somebody deciding out loud that this is the place, and naming where you are has never once required knowing how long you will be there. Genesis 26:22 has a man stop and name a well after two that were taken from him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as permission rather than as settling for something.

And notice what follows the naming. We shall be fruitful in the land. The fruitfulness comes after the deciding, not before it.

You are able to say now about a place you did not plan on, and deciding to be here has never once been the same as giving up on anywhere else. The Spirit of God is the one who lets a person put a name on where they actually are, and it is written in Genesis that the room was named before anything grew in it.

Nine years is not a stopgap

Here is the arithmetic that nobody in that house has done out loud.

Nine years is not a temporary arrangement. It is longer than most jobs. It is most of a childhood. It is longer than a great many marriages last, and it is very likely the longest stretch anybody in that family has lived in one place.

Whatever that house is on paper, it is where your life has actually been happening, in full, every day, for nine years.

You have been living somewhere for nine years while treating it as an interval, and a place where a life happens has never once been made temporary by an intention. It is written in Genesis 26:22 that a man named a place the moment he stopped being moved on, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person see the length of something they have not counted.

And here is the cost of the arrangement, which is the reason this is worth an evening.

Everything in that house has been held at arm's length for nine years, including the people in it. A man who is quietly waiting to leave somewhere does not fully arrive in the evenings either.

That is not a moral failure. It is the ordinary consequence of a stance, and stances can be changed in about four minutes.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Deciding to stay does not mean doing everything yourself. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly, and if you rent, ask the owner in writing before anything permanent.

You are entirely right to keep the hard line while you change the stance, and choosing to be here has never once meant taking on things that belong to somebody licensed. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a man peace about a boundary, and Scripture has Isaac name a place rather than build everything in it at once.

Do one thing that only makes sense if you are staying

So here is the ask, and the wording of it is the whole test.

Do one thing tonight that only makes sense for somebody who is staying.

That is the criterion. Not useful. Not overdue. Something that would be pointless for a man moving out in the spring.

Plant something slow. Put a hook on a wall. Fix the thing in the room you have never decided about. Open one box in the loft. Hang the picture that has been leaning against a wall since two thousand and sixteen.

You are able to do one thing tonight that assumes a future in this place, and one act that only makes sense for somebody staying has never once locked anybody in. The Spirit of God is the one who is present when somebody stops holding a place at arm's length, and Genesis 26:22 has a man name a well now rather than eventually.

And notice what it costs. Almost nothing, and about eleven minutes.

Nine years of a stance has been maintained without one single act ever being required to support it. That is how stances work. They are free to hold and they cost everything, and one small contradicting act does more to them than any amount of thinking.

You have permission to act as though you live here, and one hook on one wall has never once been a promise about the rest of your life. It is written in Genesis that the naming came first and the fruitfulness came after it, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that hallway with you.
