I Have Watched Forty Videos

You could teach that job now. That is the strange part.

You could stand in front of a room and explain it. You know why the second method is better than the first. You know the mistake most people make at the fourth step and you know why they make it.

You have never touched the thing.

Forty videos. Some of them twice. Three different people explaining the same ten minute job, and you now have opinions about which of them is best, and there is a drawer in your kitchen that has not opened properly since the spring.

And it feels like getting ready. That is what makes it so hard to see. Every video feels like progress, because you know slightly more at the end of it than you did at the start, and that is technically true and completely useless.

Let me put the important thing down first. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and neither is wanting to understand something before you touch it. What has happened here is not cowardice. It is a good instinct that has run past the point where it was helping.

Doers of the word

There is a sentence in James about hearing and doing that is unusually direct.

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. (James 1:22, King James Version)

The phrase to sit with is deceiving your own selves. James is not saying that hearing is bad. He is saying that hearing produces a feeling of having done something, and that the feeling is not accurate.

That is exactly what forty videos do. Each one produces the sensation of progress, and the sensation is real, and nothing in the kitchen has changed.

You have been receiving a feeling of progress that Scripture itself warns is not the real thing, and being deceived by that has never once been the same as being unwilling. James 1:22 names the gap between hearing and doing without one word of contempt for the hearer, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that land as clarity rather than as a scolding.

And notice that James does not tell them to hear less. He tells them to do also. The hearing was never the problem. The stopping there was.

You are allowed to keep everything you have learned and add one action to it, and forty hours of understanding has never once been wasted on the person who finally puts a hand on it. The Spirit of God is the one who moves a person from knowing into doing without shaming the knowing, and it is written in James that the doing is what completes what the hearing began.

Why the fortieth video taught you nothing

Here is what is actually happening, and it is worth knowing because it explains why more watching will not fix it.

There are two kinds of knowledge in a practical job. There is what happens, which is what a video gives you, and there is what it feels like, which no video has ever given anybody.

How much force is too much. What the screw sounds like when it is about to strip. How a piece of wood resists in the second before it gives. All of that lives in the hands and arrives only through contact, and it is the entire difference between somebody who has watched and somebody who can.

You have collected everything a screen is able to give and none of what only contact gives, and the missing half has never once been a thing more watching could supply. It is written in James 1:22 that hearing without doing deceives the hearer, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a person the last six inches from a screen to a drawer.

There is a second thing, quieter and more honest. As long as you are still preparing, you have not failed at it. Preparation is a room with no possibility of failure in it, and that is a comfortable room, and forty videos is a long time to stay in a comfortable room.

That is not weakness. Everybody does it about something. But it deserves to be called by its right name.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Some jobs should never be attempted no matter how many videos anybody watches. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly. Watching forty videos does not move a job across that line, and no amount ever will.

You are entirely right to keep a whole category permanently out of your hands, and knowing which knowledge does not qualify anybody has never once been a smaller kind of wisdom. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person calm about a boundary, and Scripture puts the doing rather than the hearing at the end of the process.

Thirty seconds with your hands

So here is the ask, and it is deliberately shorter than a single video.

Close the phone and do the first thirty seconds of the job with your hands.

Not the job. The first thirty seconds. Open the drawer and take out what is in it. Find the screws. Put a finger on the runner and feel which way it moves.

You are able to give this thirty seconds of contact tonight, and half a minute with your hands on the actual thing has never once taught you less than a whole evening of watching. The Spirit of God is the one who is with a person in the first small act rather than only in the finished one, and James 1:22 puts the doing right beside the hearing as the thing that completes it.

Thirty seconds is chosen on purpose. It is under the threshold where the dread lives. Nobody has ever built up anxiety about half a minute, and once your hands are on the thing, the next four minutes usually happen without any decision being required.

And here is what will surprise you. Almost immediately, the forty videos become useful. All that stored knowledge, which has been floating free with nothing to attach to, snaps onto the actual object the moment you touch it. Nothing was wasted. It was simply waiting for something to hold on to.

You have permission to put down the phone in the middle of a video and go and touch it, and stopping the preparation has never once meant losing what the preparation gave you. It is written in James that the doer and not the hearer only is the one who is blessed in his deed, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in the kitchen with you.
