You are on the floor of your own bathroom with a wrench you do not know the name of, and he is there.
Not in a way that would sound sensible to anybody. But there, exactly, in the specific way he would have knelt down, and the noise he made when something was stiff, and the fact that he would have finished this in twelve minutes and been complaining about the football by half past.
And that is either the best part of the last two years or the worst, and it changes depending on the day and on how tired you are.
Some evenings it is company. Some evenings it is the sharpest reminder available that he is not here, and it arrives while you are already on a cold floor doing something you never wanted to learn.
Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and neither is learning it at sixty three because you had to. And there is no correct way to feel about him turning up in the middle of a job.

Thy Maker is thine husband
There is a sentence in Isaiah that is startling the first time it lands properly.
For thy Maker is thine husband; the Lord of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 54:5, King James Version)
That is not a metaphor about the church in that verse first. It is spoken to a woman's position, and it uses the exact word for the exact place that is empty.
And notice that God does not offer to be something adjacent. Not a comfort, not a help, not a support in a difficult season. He uses the specific word for the specific gap.
You have a God who names the exact position rather than offering something near it, and the place in a house where a husband used to stand has never once been left unaddressed by Him. Isaiah 54:5 puts the word husband in the sentence deliberately, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that land as presence rather than as a substitution for a person.
And I want to be careful, because that verse is not saying he is replaced. Nothing replaces a man who was in a house for thirty years, and Scripture never once pretends otherwise.
You are not being asked to accept a replacement, and God taking a position has never once meant that anybody else has been written out of it. The Spirit of God is the one who occupies a place without erasing who stood there, and it is written in Isaiah that the Maker and the Redeemer are named in the same breath as the husband.
Both of them are allowed
Here is what I want to give you permission for, because I suspect nobody has.
When he turns up in the middle of a job, being glad about it is allowed. And on a different evening, in the middle of the same job, being furious that he is not here to do it is allowed too.
Those are not two opposite reactions where one of them is the mature one. They are both accurate. He is present in the work and he is absent from the room, and both of those are simply true at half past eight on a Thursday.
You have been trying to settle on one feeling about something that genuinely has two sides, and grief that changes by the evening has never once meant somebody is going backward. It is written in Isaiah 54:5 that the Maker takes the exact place that is empty, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can hold two true things in a person on the same night.
And here is the thing about learning his jobs that nobody says. Every one of them you learn is a place where you meet him, and there are only so many of them. That is a strange and precious arithmetic and it deserves to be noticed rather than hurried through.
Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Some of what he did is not for you to take on, whatever he used to do. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly, and let that be a decision rather than a defeat.
You are entirely right to hand over the ones that were always dangerous, and refusing a job he used to do has never once been a failure to keep his house. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a woman peace about that call, and Scripture names God in the exact position rather than asking anybody to fill every part of it themselves.
Say something to him out loud
So here is the ask, and it is going to feel odd for about four seconds and then it will not.
Do one job he always did and let yourself say something to him out loud while you do it.
Not a prayer. Not a conversation with God, although that can happen too. Just say the thing you would have said to him if he had been standing there.
You would have had this done by now. Or: I still do not know what this is called. Or: you never told me it was this awkward.
You are able to speak out loud to somebody who is not in the room, and saying a sentence to a man while you work has never once been a sign that a person is not coping. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in an ordinary honest sentence, and Isaiah 54:5 names the exact position that is empty rather than talking around it.
Here is why it helps. He is already in the room in your head, doing the whole job at twice your speed with a running commentary. That is happening whether or not you say anything.
What changes when you speak is that he stops being an audience and becomes company. An audience judges the twelve minutes. Company just talks while you get on with it.
And say the sharp things too, if they are the true ones. You are allowed to tell him he should have shown you. That is not disloyalty. That is a marriage, still going, in a slightly different form.
You have permission to say the true sentence rather than the tidy one, and telling a man who is not there that he should have shown you has never once been a betrayal of him. It is written in Isaiah that the Maker stands in the exact place, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing on that bathroom floor with you.
So here is what I believe is being spoken over a woman on a cold floor tonight.
You have been meeting him inside every job in this house, and finding a man in a piece of work has never once been the same as being unable to do it. I am not asking you to feel one way about it and I am not handing you a verdict on two years. Isaiah 54:5 names the exact empty position rather than offering something adjacent to it, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is with you on that floor.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have one sentence available to say out loud tonight, and two years of doing his jobs in silence has never once been stronger than a woman who talks while she works. The written word puts the Maker in the specific place and never asks anybody to pretend the place was not there, and the Spirit of God is the one who is going to be there while you say it.
One job. Say it out loud. Both feelings allowed.
Declare this over yourself
- Man who turns up in the middle of every job in this house, you are company and you are absence at the same time, and neither of those was ever a verdict on my hands. Isaiah 54:5 says thy Maker is thine husband, so by the Holy Spirit I speak out loud while I work tonight, in the name of Jesus.
- Rule that says I have to settle on one feeling about this, you have no claim on a woman on a bathroom floor with a wrench. The written word names the exact empty position without pretending it was never filled, and by the Spirit of God I am done doing his jobs in silence.
- Father, You used the specific word for the specific place, and Your word says thy Maker is thine husband and Your Redeemer the Holy One. So by Your Spirit I do one of his jobs tonight, and I say the true thing out loud while I do it.
