The Job Nobody SeesMatthew 7:3

I See It In Everybody Elses House

This message is for the woman who notices a loose handle in a friend's kitchen inside a minute and has walked past her own for four years, and has never asked herself why the eye works one way

You walked into your friend's kitchen in April and saw it in about forty seconds.

The cabinet handle sitting slightly crooked. You did not go looking for it. You were carrying a dish and saying hello, and it arrived anyway, the way things do.

You did not say anything, because you are not that kind of person. You noticed and you moved on and you had a lovely afternoon.

Now go and stand in your own kitchen and count the handle that has been loose since the spring of the year before last.

Four years. Twice a day. Both hands on it. And it has never once arrived in your mind the way that other one did in forty seconds, and if somebody asked you tomorrow to list what is wrong in your kitchen, you would have to go and look.

That is not carelessness and it is not hypocrisy. Nobody ever explained to most of us how attention actually works, and a gap in the explanation has never been a gap in the person. I want that settled before we go one step further.

I See It In Everybody Elses House

The beam and the mote

There is a line in Matthew that everybody knows and that gets used as a weapon far more often than it gets read.

And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? (Matthew 7:3, King James Version)

I want to be honest about what that passage is actually about, because I am not going to twist a verse to make a point about kitchens. Jesus is talking about judgment. He is speaking to people who were quick to assess somebody else and slow to assess themselves, and the whole paragraph is a warning about that.

But sitting inside it is an observation about human sight that is simply accurate, and God put it there because it is true of everybody. The eye is astonishing at distance and terrible at close range. It sees the speck across the room and misses the plank at home.

You have been given a piece of Scripture that describes your eyes accurately rather than one that accuses you, and a plank you cannot see has never once been the same as a plank you refused to see. Matthew 7:3 names the whole pattern out loud so that a person can do something about it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land as help and not as a charge.

And notice the word Jesus uses about the near thing. Considerest not. Not refusest to consider. Not hidest. The near thing simply does not get considered, because it does not arrive.

You are living with something that has not arrived rather than something you have been dodging, and never noticing a thing has never once been a moral act. The Spirit of God is the one who can bring a near thing forward until it is finally visible, and it is written in Matthew that the near thing goes unconsidered precisely because it is near.

Why the eye works better in her kitchen

Here is the mechanism, because understanding it is worth more than feeling bad about it.

Your brain builds a model of the rooms you live in. It has to. If it processed every surface of your own kitchen from scratch every time you walked in, you would be worn out by lunchtime. So after a few weeks it stops looking and starts remembering, and it only sends you the differences.

The handle came loose four years ago. That was a difference for about a week, and then the model updated, and now the loose handle is simply what that cabinet looks like.

You have a mind that stopped spending energy on a settled fact, and an updated model has never once been a defect in the woman it was protecting. It is written in Matthew 7:3 that the near thing is the one that escapes notice, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can reopen a room a person has stopped looking at.

Walk into your friend's kitchen and none of that applies. There is no model. Every surface is new. So the whole room arrives at once, the way your own house did in the first two weeks after you moved in, and the crooked handle comes with it.

That is why the eye works in her kitchen. Not out of criticism. There is simply no model of her cabinets anywhere in your head.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than at the bottom. Some of what a fresh eye will show you is not yours to touch. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional for those and pay them properly, and let that be a plain fact rather than a defeat.

You are able to see a thing clearly and still hand it to somebody qualified, and knowing which jobs are not yours has never once been a smaller kind of competence. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person peace about a line they have decided not to cross, and Matthew 7:3 puts the whole value on seeing rightly rather than on acting immediately.

Arrive at your own house

So here is the move, and it is a piece of theater that works far better than it sounds.

Walk out of your own front door. Stand there for ten seconds. Then walk back in as though arriving at somebody else's house for the first time.

Carry something. Make it real. A bag, a coat over the arm, a plate. Come in through the door, walk to the kitchen the way a guest walks, and let the room arrive.

You are entirely able to arrive at your own house on purpose, and ten seconds on your own doorstep has never once been too silly a thing for God to use. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a small deliberate act into a hinge, and Scripture names the near unconsidered thing exactly so that it can be considered.

Then name one thing out loud. Only one. Say it plainly, the way you would think it in your friend's kitchen. The handle is crooked.

Saying it is the part that matters. A thought stays inside the model. A sentence spoken out loud in a room goes into the world, and the world is where things get fixed.

You have been carrying an unseen thing that becomes ordinary the second it is spoken, and one sentence said out loud has never once been able to condemn the woman who said it. Matthew 7:3 sets the whole problem up as a failure to consider rather than a failure of character, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in the kitchen with you.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman standing in her own kitchen tonight.

You have eyes that work beautifully, and four years of walking past your own handle has never once been proof of anything about you. I am not handing you a lecture out of Matthew 7 and I am not handing you a verdict. That passage names an ordinary property of human sight so that people can work with it, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is standing in this kitchen with you.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have permission to arrive in your own house like a guest and let the room speak, and a model your mind built four years ago has never once been stronger than a woman coming through her own front door on purpose. The written word puts the unconsidered thing right in front of a person so it can finally be considered, and the Spirit of God is the one who is going to be there when you say it out loud.

Out the door. Ten seconds. Back in. One thing.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Handle that has been loose since the spring, you are four minutes of work and you were never once a verdict on the woman using you. Matthew 7:3 names the near thing as the one that goes unconsidered, so by the Holy Spirit I walk in and see you tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Voice that calls this hypocrisy, you have no claim on a woman standing on her own doorstep. The written word describes a property of human sight rather than a fault in a person, and by the Spirit of God I am done reading four years of not noticing as a fact about my character.
  3. Father, You put that sentence in Your book so that people could turn and look at what is nearest to them. Your word says the near thing is the unconsidered thing, so by Your Spirit I come through my own door like a guest tonight, and I say one true sentence out loud in my own kitchen.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
