The Quote Was Three Weeks Of Wages

He said the number on the doorstep, cheerfully, the way a man says a number he says forty times a week.

And you did the arithmetic in your head before he had finished the sentence, and the arithmetic came out at about three weeks.

Not three weeks of spare money. Three weeks of getting up, and going, and coming home, and doing it again. That is what the number is, translated into the currency your life is actually paid in.

And he was not overcharging. That is the part that makes it worse. That is a fair price for that work, and he has a van and a family and years of training, and every bit of it is reasonable.

The number is fair and it is impossible, and both of those are true at once, and there is nowhere to put a thing like that.

Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and neither is earning what you earn. A price that is out of reach says something about a market and nothing at all about a man.

I know how to be abased

There is a sentence in Philippians where Paul says something about money that most people quote only half of.

I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. (Philippians 4:12, King James Version)

Look at the word abased. It means brought low, put down, humbled by circumstances. Paul does not soften it and he does not spiritualize it away.

And notice that he says he had to learn it. I am instructed. It did not arrive naturally and it was not a personality trait. It was a thing a man was taught over years, in situations exactly like the one on your doorstep.

You have a Bible in which being brought low by circumstances is named plainly as a thing that happens to good men, and a number you cannot meet has never once been a report on the man holding it. Philippians 4:12 uses the word abased without apology, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as company rather than as an instruction to be content faster.

And notice what Paul is not doing. He is not saying the hunger did not matter, or that he had risen above it. He says he knows how to be in it, which is a completely different claim.

You are allowed to be in this rather than above it, and knowing how to stand inside a shortage has never once required pretending it is not one. The Spirit of God is the one who teaches a man to stand in a low place without losing himself, and it is written in Philippians that the learning covered both being full and being hungry.

What the number is actually buying

Here is what nobody explains when a quote lands on a doorstep, and it changes what the number feels like.

Almost all of that figure is labor, and labor is not one thing. It is knowing which of four possible causes it is, which takes two minutes and twenty years. It is having the part on the van. It is insurance, and the drive, and the fact that he cannot be anywhere else that morning. It is being responsible if it goes wrong.

Some of those you cannot supply at any price. Some of them you can supply for nothing at all, because you live there.

You have been reading one number instead of four or five, and a single figure has never once told anybody what they were actually buying. It is written in Philippians 4:12 that a man was taught to stand in a low place without pretending, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a lump and lets a person see the parts of it.

So the question is not can I afford this. The question is which parts of this am I buying and which parts do I already have.

Often the money is buying forty minutes of somebody else doing a thing that would take three hours at home, and three hours on a Saturday is a currency that is already in the house.

And sometimes the answer is that all of it is worth paying for and you have to wait. That is a legitimate answer and it is not a defeat.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. The one thing never worth saving on is the category that can kill. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly, and wait for the money as long as it takes.

You are entirely right to wait months rather than attempt something dangerous, and choosing to wait for a professional has never once been the same as being defeated by a price. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a man peace in that waiting, and Scripture puts the learning on how to stand in a low place rather than on how to get out of it fast.

Convert it back into hours

So here is the ask, and it is arithmetic done out loud.

Convert the quote back into hours and say out loud which part of the job is actually worth them.

Take the number and turn it into your hours. You have already done that once, in your head, on the doorstep. Do it again deliberately, and this time do not stop there.

You are able to do that arithmetic on purpose rather than by ambush, and a number looked at deliberately has never once been heavier than one that arrived on a doorstep. The Spirit of God is the one who steadies a man in front of a hard figure, and Philippians 4:12 records a man instructed in exactly this.

Then split the job and say out loud which parts you are willing to spend those hours on.

Getting the old one out. Clearing the space. Taking the door off so he does not have to. Every one of those is time rather than skill, and every hour of it is an hour that stays at home.

Then say the last part out loud too. This part is his and I am going to wait for it.

You have permission to buy the part you cannot supply and supply the rest yourself, and paying for some of a job has never once been a smaller thing than paying for all of it. It is written in Philippians that the man learned to be abased and to abound without pretending either one was the other, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that hallway with you.
