It Needs Doing And There Is Nothing To Pay With

It needs doing, and there is nothing to pay anybody with. Both of those are simply true.

I am not going to open this by suggesting the money is there if you look harder, or that it is a matter of arranging things differently. That would be an insult, and this site does not do it.

The money is not there. That is a fact about a month, and it is a hard one, and it does not become less hard by being reframed.

What I want to look at is a second thing that has quietly attached itself to the first one. Somewhere in the last few months, cannot pay turned into cannot act. Those two arrived together and they got filed as one, and only one of them is true.

Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and neither is being short of money. Neither of those is a fact about a person's worth, and I am going to keep saying that until it is boring.

Silver and gold have I none

There is a moment in Acts where a man states an absence out loud before he does anything else.

Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee. (Acts 3:6, King James Version)

I want to be careful about what I am drawing from this, because what follows in that chapter is a miracle of healing, and I am not going to turn a healing into a lesson about household repairs or suggest that anything in your house works that way.

What I am taking is the shape of Peter's sentence, and it is worth having. He names the absence plainly, without embarrassment and without apology. Silver and gold have I none. Full stop.

And then, immediately, he moves to the other list. Such as I have.

You have a Bible in which a man says plainly that he has no money and does not treat that as the end of the sentence, and an empty account has never once been the whole of what a person is holding. Acts 3:6 puts the naming of the absence and the naming of the possession right beside each other, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as dignity rather than as a trick about attitude.

Notice that he does not minimize the absence either. He does not say the money does not matter. He says it is not there, and then he says what is.

You are allowed to state what is missing without pretending it is small, and naming a shortage plainly has never once been the same as complaining. The Spirit of God is the one who lets a person be honest about a lack without shame attached, and it is written in Acts that the man said both halves in one breath.

Two lists that got filed as one

Here is the piece of work I want done tonight, and it is a pen and a piece of paper.

Right now, in your head, this job has one entry attached to it, and the entry is: no money. That single entry has absorbed everything else, and once a job is filed under no money, nothing about it gets looked at again.

So the tools you own are not in the file. The four hours on Saturday are not in the file. The neighbor who has done this exact thing twice is not in the file. Which part of it is actually the expensive part is not in the file, because nobody ever separated the parts.

You have been carrying one entry where there should be a list, and a job filed under a single word has never once had all of it looked at. It is written in Acts 3:6 that the man named what he lacked and then named what he had, and the Holy Spirit is the one who opens a file that got closed months ago.

And here is what is almost always true when the parts get separated. A job that costs money as a whole usually has three or four parts, and one of them is the expensive one. The other parts are ordinary work that anybody can do with what is already in the house.

Sometimes the whole thing has been waiting on one small part that costs very little, and nobody knew, because the whole thing was priced as one lump by somebody on the phone eight months ago.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. When the expensive part is the dangerous part, that is exactly the one to save for and never to attempt. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly when the money is there, and wait without shame until it is.

You are entirely right to wait months for the money to do a dangerous job properly, and waiting for the right thing has never once been the same as being stuck. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person peace in the waiting, and Scripture has a man state his lack out loud and then act inside what he actually had.

Two lines, and the money on its own

So here is the ask, and it takes about six minutes.

Write down what you do have for this job, and put the money question on a separate line.

Take a piece of paper and split it. On one side, everything you actually have. Tools in the house. Time this week, in real hours. People who know how. What you already know. What can be done with hands and no money at all.

You are able to write down what you have in six minutes, and an honest inventory has never once made anybody poorer. The Spirit of God is the one who lets a person see what is in their hand, and Acts 3:6 puts the such as I have right beside the silver and gold have I none.

On the other side, one line only: what this actually needs money for, and how much.

Not the whole job. The specific part. If you do not know, write that down as the question rather than as a wall, because a question can be answered with one phone call and a wall cannot be answered at all.

And then look at the two sides together, which is something you have not done since this started.

You have permission to see this job in parts rather than as one closed thing, and separating what is possible from what is expensive has never once been a way of pretending the money is there. It is written in Acts that the man named the lack and the possession in the same breath, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing at that table with you.
