No Money For A TradeEcclesiastes 4:9

I Traded Work For Work And Felt Small

This message is for the man who swapped a day of his own labor for a neighbor's skill, got exactly what he needed, and felt diminished by an arrangement that was actually honorable

He did the job in about forty minutes and it would have taken you a weekend and probably two attempts.

And you spent a Saturday clearing his yard, which would have taken him a weekend, because he is sixty two and his back is what it is.

That is an even trade. Anybody looking at it from outside would say so immediately. Both of you got something you could not easily get otherwise, and neither of you handed over any money, and the whole thing was warm and ordinary and worked perfectly.

And you have felt strange about it ever since.

Not guilty exactly. Smaller. As though something in the transaction went the wrong way, and you cannot point at which part of it.

Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and neither is trading your time for somebody's skill. That is one of the oldest arrangements there is and there is nothing beneath anybody in it.

I Traded Work For Work And Felt Small

Two are better than one

There is a passage in Ecclesiastes about two people working, and the reason it gives is completely practical.

Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth. (Ecclesiastes 4:9, King James Version)

That is not a sentiment about friendship. It is an argument about output and about risk, made in plain terms.

Two people working together get a better return, and one of them can pick the other one up. That is the whole case, and Solomon makes it without any embarrassment about the fact that people need each other.

You have a Bible that argues for two people working together on entirely practical grounds, and needing somebody else's hands has never once been a weakness in the arrangement. Ecclesiastes 4:9 puts the reward and the lifting up side by side, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as design rather than as a concession to poverty.

And notice the line about being alone. Woe to him that is alone when he falleth. The person in trouble in that passage is not the one who accepted help. It is the one who had nobody.

You are on the right side of that sentence rather than the wrong one, and having somebody to trade with has never once been the position Scripture calls unfortunate. The Spirit of God is the one who puts two people beside each other on purpose, and it is written in Ecclesiastes that the one alone is the one to be concerned about.

Where the strange feeling came from

Here is what I think actually happened, and it is not about the trade.

Money is anonymous. When a man pays for a job, nobody has to know anything about him. The transaction says nothing about who he is or what he can do, and it closes completely the moment the money moves.

A trade is not anonymous. A trade says: here is what I can do, and here is what I cannot. And that is a much more exposing thing to put on a table, especially in front of a neighbor you will see every week for the next fifteen years.

So the strangeness was never about the value. It was about being known.

You have been feeling the exposure rather than the imbalance, and being seen not to know something has never once been the same as being short changed. It is written in Ecclesiastes 4:9 that two working together is the arrangement with the better return, and the Holy Spirit is the one who names the actual thing a man is feeling.

And there is a second piece, which is worth being honest about. Trading feels like something people do when they cannot pay, and there is an old and stupid idea sitting underneath that, which says paying is the dignified version.

It is not. It is only the version where nobody finds out anything about you.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. A trade never covers the dangerous category. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly, and do not let a neighbor who is willing take on something that needs a license and insurance.

You are entirely right to keep a friend away from a job that needs a licensed trade, and refusing a favor on those has never once been ungrateful. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a man clarity about that line, and Scripture puts the case for two people on practical ground rather than on convenience.

Offer the trade and name both halves

So here is the ask, and the second half of it is what makes it a trade rather than a favor.

Offer one specific trade to one person this week and name both halves of it.

Out loud, in one sentence, with both sides in it. I will clear that yard for you on Saturday if you will show me how to hang that door.

You are able to say one sentence with both halves in it, and naming what you are giving has never once made a request into a burden. The Spirit of God is the one who gives a man the words for an offer, and Ecclesiastes 4:9 argues for two people working on the plainest possible grounds.

Naming both halves is the whole thing. A request with only one half in it puts somebody in the position of doing you a favor, and favors sit unevenly and both people feel it.

A trade with both halves named is a proposal between equals, and it lands completely differently in the ear of the person hearing it.

And be specific about your half. Not: I will help you out sometime. A day, a task, a date. Because your half is real and it has value, and vague offers make it sound like it does not.

You have permission to state what you are bringing as plainly as what you are asking for, and putting both halves on the table has never once been a smaller thing than paying. It is written in Ecclesiastes that two are better than one because of the reward, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that yard with you.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being said over a man standing in his own yard tonight.

You have traded a day of your work for a day of his, and an even exchange has never once been the same as taking something. I am not telling you the feeling was silly and I am not handing you a verdict on three weeks. Ecclesiastes 4:9 argues for two people on practical grounds and reserves its concern for the man who is alone, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is standing there with you.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have one sentence with two halves in it available this week, and an old idea that paying is the dignified version has never once been stronger than two men doing what each of them is good at. The written word puts the better reward on the two working together, and the Spirit of God is the one who is going to be there when you make the offer.

Both halves. Out loud. Specific.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Strange feeling after a fair trade, you were never about the value, and you were never once a sign that I took something. Ecclesiastes 4:9 says two are better than one, so by the Holy Spirit I offer a proper trade this week, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Old idea that paying is the dignified version, you have no claim on a man who cleared a yard for a whole Saturday. The written word puts the concern on the one who is alone and the reward on the two, and by the Spirit of God I am done reading being known as being diminished.
  3. Father, You argued for two people on plain practical ground and You said woe to him that is alone when he falls. Your word says it in Ecclesiastes, so by Your Spirit I offer one trade this week, and I name both halves of it out loud.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
