It Is Not Mine To Fix And Nobody Will

It is not yours, you are not allowed to touch it, and nobody is coming.

Those three things are all true at once, and together they make a box with no door in it.

You have called. Twice, or four times, or eleven. You have been told somebody will be in touch. You have had the conversation where you were pleasant about it and the conversation where you were slightly less pleasant about it, and neither of them produced anybody at the door.

And meanwhile you live in it. Every day. You are the one who has it in the morning, and at eleven at night, and nobody who has any power over it has to look at it at all.

Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and neither is being a tenant. Being unable to fix your own home because the paperwork says so is not a failure of nerve or of competence. It is a genuine constraint and you did not invent it.

Rest in the Lord and wait patiently

There is a line in Psalm 37 that gets read as a general instruction to be calm, and it is more specific than that.

Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way. (Psalm 37:7, King James Version)

Look at what is actually being described. Somebody else is prospering, doing well, going on with their life, and the person the psalm is speaking to is not in a position to do anything about it.

That is not a general mood instruction. That is a very particular situation, and it is the one where somebody has power over your circumstances and is not using it well.

You have a psalm written for the exact position of being unable to move somebody else, and being stuck behind another person's decision has never once been a failure of the person waiting. Psalm 37:7 names the one prospering and tells the other one not to fret, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as understanding rather than as an instruction to stop minding.

And notice the word fret. It is a wearing word. It describes something that grinds a person down over time, which is exactly what eleven unanswered calls do.

You are being addressed in the wearing rather than told the situation is fine, and a psalm about fretting has never once meant that the thing being fretted about is small. The Spirit of God is the one who steadies a person inside a situation they cannot move, and it is written in Psalm 37 that the resting is offered to somebody watching another person do well.

What is actually available to you

Here is the honest map, because a box with no door in it is usually a box with a small door somebody has not looked for.

There are three categories here and they have been collapsed into one.

You are able to see this as three things rather than one closed box, and a constraint on one part has never once been a constraint on all of it. The Spirit of God is the one who opens a thing that has been carried as sealed, and Psalm 37:7 speaks its rest to a person who genuinely cannot move somebody else.

The first is the things you genuinely may not touch. Anything plumbed in, anything structural, anything electrical beyond a bulb. Those are not yours, and they are not yours for a good reason, and that reason is not only the agreement. It is that nobody in that apartment knows what is behind that wall.

The second is the things that are technically the owner's but nobody on earth would object to. A loose handle. A screw. A hinge. A sticking drawer. Nothing that leaves a mark, nothing that changes anything, nothing that could not be undone in a minute.

The third is the part that is actually yours, which is the record.

You have three separate categories that have been carried as one, and a rule about one of them has never once applied to all of them. It is written in Psalm 37:7 that the fretting is what wears a person down, and the Holy Spirit is the one who separates what is genuinely closed from what was never closed at all.

And the record is the piece that matters most, because it is the only part that has any power in it.

A phone call is not a record. Eleven phone calls are not a record. Somebody said they would be in touch is not a record. A written message, dated, with the fault described plainly, is a record, and it is the one thing in this whole situation that changes anybody's position.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. In a rented place especially, never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof, and never anything plumbed in. Those are the owner's responsibility and his liability, and putting your own hands on them removes both. Report it in writing and let it be his, and where it is genuinely dangerous, tell him in writing to call a licensed professional today.

You are entirely right to refuse a job that belongs to somebody else, and leaving a dangerous fault with the person responsible for it has never once been passivity. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person peace about that line, and Scripture speaks its rest to somebody who genuinely cannot move the other party.

One written message, dated

So here is the ask, and it is short and it is written.

Send one written message about it tonight, dated, and keep a copy.

In writing. Text, email, a letter, anything that leaves a trace. Describe the fault plainly and factually, say how long it has been there, and ask when it will be looked at.

You are able to send one plain written message tonight, and putting a fault in writing has never once been an act of hostility. The Spirit of God is the one who steadies a person into doing the useful thing instead of the frustrated one, and Psalm 37:7 speaks rest to somebody watching another person carry on unbothered.

No anger in it. Not because anger is wrong here, because it is entirely reasonable, but because a calm factual record is far more useful later than a satisfying message is tonight.

And keep the copy. That is the whole point. What is being built is not a complaint, it is a timeline, and a timeline is the only thing that has ever moved a situation like this one.

Then do one thing from the second category. Tighten the handle. Fix the drawer. Something small and reversible that makes the actual daily mornings better while the rest of it sits with him.

You have permission to build a record and to fix a handle on the same evening, and doing one small thing has never once weakened anybody's position about a large one. It is written in Psalm 37 that the fretting is the thing to be delivered from, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that apartment with you.
