He would say yes in about a second and a half.
That is not in doubt. He is your brother, he has it, he would not think twice, and he would probably be pleased to be asked.
And you have spent two years living with a job done badly rather than say eleven words to him.
You have gone round it in every direction. You have done it yourself twice. You have looked at doing it a third way that would probably work and probably not. You have thought about asking somebody else, which is somehow easier and also worse.
Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and neither is finding it hard to ask family for help. That is not pride in the way the word usually gets used, and I am not going to spend this article accusing you of it.

Bear ye one another's burdens
There is an instruction in Galatians about carrying things, and the direction of it is worth noticing.
Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2, King James Version)
It is written to a group, and it runs both ways. Bear one another's, which means everybody in that sentence is carrying and everybody is being carried.
There is no permanent giver and no permanent receiver in it. The arrangement only works if people take turns, and taking a turn at being carried is half of the instruction.
You have a command that requires somebody to be carried, and being on the receiving end has never once been the lesser half of what God asked for. Galatians 6:2 makes the bearing mutual by construction, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as an invitation rather than as a thing other people get to do for you.
And notice how highly the verse rates it. The law of Christ, it says, is fulfilled in this. That is a very large phrase for what looks like an ordinary neighborly act.
You are being offered a part in something Scripture calls fulfilling the law of Christ, and letting a brother carry something has never once been a smaller act than carrying it alone. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an ask possible, and it is written in Galatians that the whole arrangement runs in both directions.
What the eleven words are actually protecting
Here is what I think is underneath it, and it is worth naming rather than being ashamed of.
Asking your brother for this would put something on the record. Not the money. The position.
It would say, out loud, in that family, which brother has it and which one does not. And in a lot of families that is not a neutral fact. It has history attached, going back years, and neither brother would say a word about any of it, and both of them would hear it.
That is not pride. That is a man protecting a position in a family, which is one of the most ordinary things a person does.
You have been protecting a position rather than refusing help, and a family history nobody ever mentions has never once been the same as arrogance. It is written in Galatians 6:2 that the bearing goes in both directions by design, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes the charge out of a family fact.
And here is the part worth weighing against it. Two years of a bad repair is also on the record. It is in the hallway. He has seen it. Everybody who comes to the house has seen it.
So the position was never actually protected. It was just protected from being said out loud, and the cost of that was two years and a job done badly twice.
Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. If what you are trying to avoid asking about is in the dangerous category, then asking is not optional. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly, and if that means asking your brother for the money, ask him.
You are entirely right to ask for help rather than attempt something dangerous, and one conversation has never once cost more than a job that can kill. The Holy Spirit is the one who settles that immediately, and Scripture puts the bearing of burdens on everybody in the room rather than on one side of it.
Ask for the smallest version
So here is the ask, and the word smallest is doing the work.
Ask him for one specific thing and name the smallest version of it.
Not: can you help me out. Not: I am in a bit of a state with the back room. The smallest concrete version, with an end on it.
Can I borrow your drill for an evening. Can you come and look at this for ten minutes on Saturday. Can you lend me what the part costs and I will give it back at the end of the month.
You are able to ask for one small specific thing, and a narrow request has never once been the same as putting yourself in anybody's debt. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an expensive sentence ordinary, and Galatians 6:2 makes the carrying mutual by the way it is written.
Small and specific matters for two reasons. It is easy to say yes to, and it is easy to finish, so the arrangement closes rather than hanging there.
And there is a third thing. A small ask puts him in the position of doing something rather than rescuing somebody, and those two feel completely different from both sides of a family.
And if you can, offer a turn back. Not to square it. Because the verse says the bearing runs both ways and a family works better when it does.
You have permission to ask for a small thing with an end on it, and a specific request has never once been able to change what a brother thinks of a brother. It is written in Galatians that we are to bear one another's burdens, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that hallway with you.
So here is what I believe is being said over a man standing in his own hallway tonight.
You have a brother one sentence away, and refusing to ask for help has never once been the same as being independent. I am not calling you proud and I am not handing you a verdict on two years. Galatians 6:2 makes the bearing mutual by construction and rates it as highly as anything in that letter, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is standing there with you.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have one small specific sentence available tonight, and two years of a position protected from being said out loud has never once been stronger than a message asking to borrow a drill. The written word puts everybody in that sentence on both sides of the carrying, and the Spirit of God is the one who is going to be there when he answers.
Small. Specific. With an end on it.
Declare this over yourself
- Eleven words I have not said in two years, you are one small request and you were never once a debt. Galatians 6:2 says bear ye one another's burdens, so by the Holy Spirit I ask him for one thing tonight, in the name of Jesus.
- Position in my family that I have been protecting, you have no claim on a man sending one message. The written word makes the carrying run in both directions by the way it is written, and by the Spirit of God I am done paying two years for a sentence I would not say.
- Father, You put the bearing of burdens on everybody in the room and You rated it as high as anything in that letter. Your word says bear ye one another's, so by Your Spirit I ask my brother for the smallest version tonight, and I do not explain myself.
