I Was Never TaughtIsaiah 28:10

I Was Told Once Too Fast

This message is for the person who was shown a job at speed by somebody impatient, understood nothing of it, and has never been able to make herself ask a second time

He showed you in about ninety seconds.

You had asked, which took something, and he was happy to help, and he did the whole job in front of you at the speed of somebody who has done it four hundred times. Hands moving. Two things happening at once. A step skipped entirely because to him it is not a step, it is just what your hand does.

And at the end he said, see, easy. And you said thanks.

And you came away with nothing. Less than nothing, actually, because now you have watched it done and still cannot do it, and that has become a new fact about you in your own private file.

Let me put the truth of it down before we go on. That was a bad demonstration. Not a bad student. A demonstration pitched at somebody who already knew, given at a speed that suited the teacher, is not teaching, and nobody following it would have come away with more than you did.

Not being able to follow something is not a character flaw. It has never once been one.

I Was Told Once Too Fast

Line upon line, here a little

There is a famous phrase in Isaiah about learning slowly, and it has a strange history that makes it stronger rather than weaker.

For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little. (Isaiah 28:10, King James Version)

People quote that as a description of how God teaches, and it is worth knowing that in the chapter where it sits, those words are mockery. Scoffers are imitating the prophet, mimicking his plain repetitive speech, saying it back to him in a sing song to make him sound like a man talking to a child.

Now sit with what that means. What they were mocking was that God spoke simply, and slowly, and repeated Himself, and gave a little and then a little more.

You have a God whose teaching pace was so patient that it got mocked for it, and needing a thing said twice has never once been beneath the way He actually teaches. Isaiah 28:10 preserves the scoffing and God let it stand in the book, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a rushed person hear that as vindication rather than as an insult.

The mockery is the evidence. Nobody mocks a teacher for going too fast.

You are asking for exactly the pace Scripture records God using, and wanting a little and then a little more has never once been a slower kind of mind. The Spirit of God is the one who is entirely unhurried with people, and it is written in Isaiah that the pace being made fun of was line upon line and here a little.

What ninety seconds actually skipped

Here is what happened in that demonstration, and it is worth naming precisely.

A person who has done a job many times has compressed it. Steps that were once separate have fused. He genuinely does not experience the wrist turn, the pause, the little check, as steps at all. They have gone below the level where he can see them.

So when he shows you, he shows you the compressed version. And the compressed version is unreproducible by anybody who has not already got the uncompressed one in their hands.

You have been handed a compressed version of something and asked to run it, and failing to unpack another person's shorthand has never once been a fault in you. It is written in Isaiah 28:10 that the teaching being described is one small piece at a time, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can slow a thing down until it comes apart into pieces a person can hold.

And there is the second thing, which is the one that keeps people stuck for years. You cannot ask him again. The window closed. He was kind, he gave you his time, and going back would mean telling him that his kindness did not work, and most people would rather stay stuck than do that.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than at the bottom. Some jobs should never be learned from a fast demonstration or a slow one. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly. Those belong to somebody who trained for years, and that is the end of it.

You are right to hand those over without a second thought, and knowing which jobs belong to somebody licensed has never once been a smaller kind of knowledge. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person calm about a line they have decided on, and Scripture puts the whole picture of teaching on small pieces given a little at a time.

Do only the first step

So here is the ask, and it is deliberately not the job.

Do the first step. Only the first step. And then stop.

If it is bleeding a radiator, tonight is finding the valve and looking at it. If it is the cabinet hinge, tonight is finding which screws hold it. If it is the drawer, tonight is pulling the drawer all the way out and turning it over.

You are able to do one step of something tonight and stop there, and taking a job apart into small pieces has never once been a slower route than pretending to follow a fast one. The Spirit of God is the one who blesses a small honest piece of progress, and Isaiah 28:10 describes precisely that shape, here a little and there a little.

Stopping is not failure. Stopping is the method. What broke the last attempt was trying to run a whole compressed job in one go, and the fix is to uncompress it yourself, one piece per evening if that is what it takes.

Write down what you found in one sentence before you go to bed. Not what you did. What you found.

You have permission to take four evenings over something a fast man does in ninety seconds, and four evenings has never once produced a worse result than one rushed one. It is written in Isaiah that the teaching went a little and then a little, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in the room with you.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody kneeling in a cold room tonight.

You were shown something at a speed nobody could have followed, and one rushed demonstration has never once been a measure of what you can learn. I am not asking you to go back and ask him and I am not handing you a verdict on two winters. Isaiah 28:10 records people mocking God's pace for being too slow and too repetitive, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is with you in that room.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have a God who teaches a little and then a little more and was mocked for exactly that, and a ninety second demonstration has never once been stronger than three unhurried evenings. The written word preserved the mockery so that the pace would be on record, and the Spirit of God is the one who is going to be there for the first step.

First step only. Then stop. Tonight.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Demonstration that went past me in ninety seconds, you were compressed and you were never once a measure of what I can learn. Isaiah 28:10 records God's pace as here a little and there a little, so by the Holy Spirit I take the first step alone tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Shame that arrives when I cannot ask again, you have no claim on a woman kneeling beside a radiator. The written word preserved the mocking of a slow patient pace so that the pace would be on record, and by the Spirit of God I am done treating one rushed afternoon as a verdict.
  3. Father, You taught line upon line and a little and a little, and they made fun of You for it. Your word says it plainly in Isaiah, so by Your Spirit I do one step tonight and I stop, and I let this take three evenings.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
