I Look It Up In Secret

It is eleven forty at night and you are typing something into a phone that you would never say out loud.

How to fix a cabinet door that will not close. Which way does a screw go. What is that thing on the end of a faucet called.

You read for six minutes. You understand about half of it. And then, before you put the phone down, you clear the history.

That last part is the one worth talking about. Not the searching. The clearing.

Because the searching is a man learning, which is a good thing, and the clearing is a man making sure nobody ever finds out he had to. And in his head those two things have to travel together, because being seen learning is the same event as being seen not knowing, and there is no version of it that is not humiliating.

Let me put the important thing down before we go on. Not knowing something is not a character flaw. It has never been one. There is no accounting anywhere in heaven where a man's worth is calculated from the number of household jobs he was shown at fifteen, and I am not going to let that arithmetic stand for one more paragraph.

He came to Jesus by night

There is a man in John's Gospel who did exactly this, and God did not correct him for the hour he chose.

The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God. (John 3:2, King James Version)

Nicodemus came at night. He was a respected man, a teacher himself, somebody with a position and a reputation, and he had questions he could not be seen asking in daylight.

And here is the thing I want you to sit with. Jesus did not say come back in the morning. He did not comment on the hour at all. He simply began teaching him, right there, at whatever time it was, and what came out of that night conversation is one of the most quoted passages in the whole Bible.

You have a Teacher who has never once turned anybody away for arriving at the wrong hour, and coming in the dark has never made what a man learns any less real. John 3:2 has a respected man arriving at night with questions, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as welcome instead of as a rebuke about courage.

Notice too what Nicodemus opens with. We know that thou art a teacher come from God. He starts by acknowledging what he does know, and then he asks about what he does not, and both halves are honest.

You are able to hold what you know and what you do not know in the same two hands, and asking about one has never once canceled the other. The Spirit of God is the one who lets a competent man be a beginner about something without losing anything, and it is written in John that the night visit produced teaching rather than a lecture about the timing.

The clearing is the expensive part

Here is the actual cost, and it is not the six minutes of reading.

Every time a man clears the history, he tells himself something. He confirms, in a small quiet way, that this learning is shameful and that it must be hidden. And that confirmation lands harder than the knowledge does, because it happens last.

So he ends the evening knowing slightly more about cabinet hinges and believing slightly more firmly that there is something wrong with him.

You have been paying a tax on your own learning that nobody else in the world charged you, and a search history has never once been evidence about the worth of a man. It is written in John 3:2 that a teacher of Israel came with questions and was received, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can take the shame off a thing that was never shameful.

There is another cost, and it is practical. A cleared history means starting from nothing the next time. You looked it up in March and you cannot find it in September, so you search again, and read the same six minutes again, and clear it again. The hiding is costing you the learning.

Now the limit, and I put it here in the middle where you are standing. Some of what you might type in at midnight is not yours to do at all. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay what they ask. That is not the shame talking. Every tradesman alive calls a different tradesman for something.

You are entirely allowed to read about a job and then hand it to somebody licensed, and understanding a thing has never once obligated a man to attempt it. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person peace about a line, and Scripture puts the whole value of that night on the questions being asked rather than on who was watching.

Leave it in the history

So here is the ask tonight, and it is one deliberate act of not doing something.

Look one thing up. And then leave it there.

Do not clear it. Close the phone with the search sitting in it, exactly where it would sit if you had looked up a football score or the weather in another city.

You are able to leave one search in a history where it belongs, and a record of a man learning has never once been a record of a man failing. The Spirit of God is the one who quietly removes a shame that was attached to the wrong thing, and John 3:2 preserved a night visit in Scripture instead of tidying it away.

That sounds like nothing. It is not nothing. The clearing is a ritual, and rituals teach. Every time you delete it, you rehearse the sentence. Every time you leave it, you contradict the sentence, and contradicting it with an action works far better than arguing with it in your head.

Nobody is going to see it. That is not the point either. The point is that you did not hide it, and you know you did not, and that is a different evening from every other evening.

And if somebody does see it, here is what will actually happen. They will say nothing at all, or they will say oh, are you doing that. And you will say yes. And the whole feared event will last three seconds and be about a cabinet.

You have permission to be a man who is openly learning something at forty seven, and one visible search has never once cost anybody the respect they were afraid of losing. It is written in John that Nicodemus came by night and was taught anyway, and the same Spirit who was in that room is standing in the kitchen with you.
