I Was Taught And I Forgot

Somebody did show you, and that is what makes it worse.

Your uncle taught you to sharpen a blade over one whole summer. Your first boss showed you how to set a door. There was a man at a place you worked in your twenties who taught you three or four real things and enjoyed teaching them.

And you cannot do any of it now.

If you had never been taught, at least the ledger would be clean. But somebody spent time on you, and it went in, and then twenty years went past and it went out again, and that reads to you as a different kind of failure. Not a gap. A waste.

I want to take that word off the table straight off. Not being able to do it now is not a character flaw, and it is not a waste of anybody's summer. Skills fade when they are not used. That is not a moral property of a person. That is how hands work, and it is how they have always worked, in everybody.

Stir up the gift

There is a line in Second Timothy where Paul writes to a younger man about something that had gone quiet in him.

Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee. (2 Timothy 1:6, King James Version)

The phrase stir up is a fire word. It means to fan into flame something whose coals are still there under the ash. Nobody stirs up a fire that has gone out completely. You stir a fire that has stopped showing.

And notice the last three words. Which is in thee. Present tense. Paul is not telling Timothy to go and get something. He is telling him that the thing is still in him and has simply stopped burning visibly.

You have something still in you rather than something gone from you, and a skill that has stopped showing has never once been the same as a skill that left. Second Timothy 1:6 says stir up rather than go and acquire, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as good news instead of as a rebuke about neglect.

There is no shaming in that verse either. Paul does not ask Timothy how he let it get like this. He simply puts him in remembrance, which is a gentle phrase for a gentle act.

You are being reminded rather than corrected, and letting something go quiet has never once been a thing God arrives to scold anybody about. The Spirit of God is the one who fans a coal without first delivering a lecture about the ash, and it is written in Second Timothy that the gift is in the man being written to.

Why it went, and what did not go

Here is what actually happened to those skills, because it is worth knowing exactly which part left.

What faded is the sequence. The order of steps, the specific angle, the number you had to remember, the little check at the end. Sequences decay fast without use. That is measurable and it happens to surgeons and pilots and everybody else, which is why they are all made to practice.

What did not fade is the deeper layer. Your hands still know what a thing feels like when it is right. You still recognize wrong when you see it. You still have the instinct about which way to go first, and that instinct took a whole summer to build and it does not evaporate.

You have kept the expensive half and lost the cheap half, and a sequence that faded has never once meant that the judgment underneath it went with it. It is written in Second Timothy 1:6 that the gift is in the man and needs stirring rather than replacing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can bring back in an evening what looked gone for twenty years.

That is why relearning something you once knew is never like learning it new. It comes back four or five times faster, and people are always slightly startled by it. What they are experiencing is the sequence being reinstalled onto a foundation that never left.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Some of what you were once shown should not come back at all. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Rules and equipment have changed since your uncle's time and a man's memory of nineteen ninety is not a qualification. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly.

You are entirely right to leave some of it in the past, and refusing to revive an old skill has never once been a failure to honor the man who taught it. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person peace about a line, and Scripture puts the stirring on what is genuinely still in a man rather than on everything he once did.

Let the hands find it

So here is the ask, and it is designed around how coming back actually works.

Do the job you used to know, badly, tonight. And do not try to remember it first.

That is the important instruction. Do not sit and attempt to recall the steps, because the steps are the part that went, and hunting for them produces nothing except the feeling of loss.

Put your hands on the thing instead and start. The hands go looking on their own, and they are far better at it than your memory is.

You are able to begin a thing you have forgotten and let your hands do the remembering, and starting without the sequence has never once been the same as starting from nothing. The Spirit of God is the one who stirs a coal rather than lighting a new fire, and Second Timothy 1:6 says the gift is still in the man being written to.

Expect it to be clumsy for about ten minutes and then get suddenly and surprisingly better. That jump is the foundation being found. It is the most encouraging ten minutes available to anybody in this position and almost nobody stays long enough to reach it.

And say his name while you do it, if he taught you and he is gone. That summer was not wasted. It is in your hands right now, underneath the part that faded.

You have permission to be clumsy in front of a skill you once had, and ten awkward minutes has never once been able to cancel a whole summer somebody gave you. It is written in Second Timothy that the stirring up is done to something already present, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing on that porch with you.
