It was a small job in the spring, and it is not a small job now.
You knew it needed doing. You also knew exactly what was in the account and what was going out of it and what was left, because you have known that every week for eleven years.
So it waited. And while it waited, the water got a little further in, or the crack got a little longer, or the thing that was going to go went.
And now the number for fixing it is bigger, and the amount available has not changed, and the gap between them has widened without one thing being your fault.
Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and neither is living on a fixed income. Nothing about this situation is a failure of management. You have managed extremely carefully, for years, and that is exactly why you can see this happening.

Take us the little foxes
There is a line in the Song of Solomon about small things and damage, and the scale of it is the useful part.
Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes. (Song of Solomon 2:15, King James Version)
The instruction is about the little ones. Not the large threat. The small persistent thing that works away at something while nobody is watching it.
And notice why they matter in that verse. Because the grapes are tender. The damage is disproportionate to the size of the animal, because of what stage the thing being damaged is at.
You have a verse that takes small damage seriously rather than dismissing it, and watching something small do real harm has never once been a failure to keep perspective. Song of Solomon 2:15 puts the attention on the little foxes on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as agreement rather than as one more thing to worry about.
And notice the verb. Take us the foxes. It is an active word, and it is plural, and it is spoken to somebody who is expected to go and do something about the small ones.
You are being handed something to do about the small end of this, and being unable to solve the whole of it has never once meant there is nothing available to you. The Spirit of God is the one who shows a person the part they can reach, and it is written in the Song of Solomon that the instruction is about the little ones and not the large.
Which part is actually growing
Here is the piece of work worth doing tonight, and it is thinking rather than spending.
A job that is growing is not growing evenly. There is one specific mechanism making it worse, and it is almost always something small and physical and slow.
Water getting in at one point. A gap that is letting something through. A crack that opens a little further every time it gets cold. Something rubbing where it should not.
That mechanism is the fox. And very often the mechanism can be slowed or stopped for nothing at all, while the actual repair still waits for the money.
You have a growing mechanism separate from the repair itself, and being unable to afford the fix has never once meant being unable to slow the damage. It is written in Song of Solomon 2:15 that the small persistent thing is what gets named, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person which end of a problem they can actually reach.
That is the difference between a job that is waiting and a job that is getting worse, and it is a difference you can often make with a cloth, a bucket, a strip of tape, a bit of shelter, or simply moving something out of the way.
It is not a repair. It is not pretending to be one. It is holding the line until the real one is possible.
Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Some growing things must not wait for anybody's budget. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof, and never water getting into anything electrical. Call a licensed professional today for those, and worry about the money afterward, in that order.
You are entirely right to call somebody before you know how to pay them when the thing is dangerous, and putting safety ahead of the arithmetic has never once been irresponsible. The Holy Spirit is the one who settles that order immediately, and Scripture puts the taking of the little foxes in the hands of the people who own the vineyard.
Stop the growing where you can
So here is the ask, and it is the small end and not the large one.
Do the one part of it you can do for nothing tonight, and stop the growing where you can.
Go and look at it properly first. Find the actual mechanism. Where exactly is the water getting in. What exactly is rubbing. Which specific thing happens that makes it slightly worse each week.
You are able to find the mechanism and put something in its way tonight, and slowing damage with a cloth and ten minutes has never once been a lesser act than paying somebody. The Spirit of God is the one who lets a person do the reachable part without shame, and Song of Solomon 2:15 puts the instruction on the little ones rather than on the whole vineyard.
Then do the free thing. Catch it. Cover it. Wedge it. Move the thing that is getting damaged. Wipe it every second day. Whatever the specific mechanism needs to be slowed down.
And write down what you did and when, because if this ever goes to somebody else, that record matters, and because it is evidence to yourself that you have not been sitting still.
You have permission to hold a line rather than solve a problem, and holding something steady while you wait has never once been the same as doing nothing. It is written in the Song of Solomon that the small ones are the ones being taken, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that room with you.
So here is what I believe is being spoken over a woman standing in her own house tonight.
You have been watching a small job grow while you wait, and arithmetic you never wanted to learn has never once been a failure of the woman doing it. I am not pretending the money is there and I am not handing you a verdict on eight months. Song of Solomon 2:15 puts the attention on the small persistent thing and hands somebody the job of taking it, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is standing there with you.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have a mechanism you can slow and a repair that can still wait, and eight months of watching a number climb has never once been stronger than ten minutes with a flashlight. The written word puts the little foxes in the hands of the ones who own the vines, and the Spirit of God is the one who is going to be there while you look.
Find the mechanism. Slow it. Write it down.
Declare this over yourself
- Small job that has been growing since the spring, you are one mechanism and you were never once beyond every part of my reach. Song of Solomon 2:15 says take us the little foxes, so by the Holy Spirit I go and find you tonight, in the name of Jesus.
- Tiredness of watching a number climb while I wait, you have no claim on a woman with a flashlight and ten minutes. The written word puts the taking of the small ones in the hands of the people who own the vines, and by the Spirit of God I am done treating waiting as doing nothing.
- Father, You named the little foxes and not the large threat, and Your word says they spoil the vines because the grapes are tender. So by Your Spirit I find the mechanism tonight and I slow it down, and I write the date beside it.
