We Kept It Neutral In Case We Had To Go

Everything in that house could be packed in a weekend, and it has been that way for eleven years.

Nothing on the walls. Nothing heavy. Nothing that would be difficult to move or awkward to explain. The furniture is the kind that goes with anything, which is another way of saying it belongs to nowhere.

And nobody decided this. There was no family meeting. It happened one small decision at a time, over more than a decade, and every one of those decisions was sensible on its own.

But stand in that front room and it does not say who lives there. That is the thing. Somebody could walk in and learn nothing at all about the people whose home it is.

Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and neither is keeping a place ready. There have been reasons, and some of them were good ones, and I am not going to spend this article telling anybody they should have felt more secure than they did.

Seek the peace of the city

There is an instruction in Jeremiah given to people who were absolutely certain they did not belong where they were.

And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the Lord for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace. (Jeremiah 29:7, King James Version)

These were exiles, taken to a city they had not chosen, expecting to leave. And God does not tell them to keep their bags by the door.

He tells them to seek that city's good. To pray for it. To put themselves into the welfare of a place they were sure was temporary.

You have an instruction given to people with far more reason to stay packed than you have, and putting yourself into a place has never once required certainty about staying. Jeremiah 29:7 tells exiles to seek the peace of a city they did not choose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as permission rather than as a demand to forget where you came from.

And notice the reason He gives. For in the peace thereof shall ye have peace. Their own wellbeing was going to come through the place, not despite it.

You are being told that your own peace is tied to the place you are actually in, and being from somewhere else has never once meant belonging nowhere. The Spirit of God is the one who joins a person to a place without taking anything away from where they came from, and it is written in Jeremiah that the exiles were to seek the good of the city itself.

What the readiness has been costing

Here is what eleven years of being packable actually costs, and it is not the decoration.

A home that says nothing about the people in it also says nothing to the people in it. Children growing up in a neutral house learn something from that, and what they learn is that this is not quite where the family is from.

And there is a second cost, which is heavier and much quieter. A family that is permanently ready to leave never fully arrives, and the arriving is where rest happens.

That is why nobody in that house entirely relaxes in it, and why it is genuinely tiring in a way nobody can name.

You have been paying for a readiness that was never once cashed in, and eleven years of keeping a place unmarked has never once made anybody safer. It is written in Jeremiah 29:7 that exiles were told to seek the peace of a city they had not chosen, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person set down a readiness they have been carrying.

And here is what I want to be careful about, because it matters. Nothing I am saying means letting go of where you came from. The opposite, in fact.

A wall with nothing on it does not honor anywhere. Putting something up that says where this family is from is not becoming less of what that family is. It is the first time in eleven years that anybody walking into that room would be told the truth about who lives there.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Putting something on a wall is yours. Anything structural, wired in or plumbed in is not. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly, and if you rent, ask the owner in writing about anything permanent.

You are entirely right to keep this to what can be taken down again, and one nail in one wall has never once been a permanent decision about anything. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a family peace about a boundary, and Scripture puts the seeking of a city's good in the hands of people who fully expected to go home.

Put one thing on a wall

So here is the ask, and it is one object and one nail.

Put one thing on a wall tonight that says who lives here.

Something with your family in it. A photograph. Something from where you are from. Something in your own language. Something a child made. It does not matter what it is, as long as somebody walking in would learn something true from it.

You are able to put one thing on one wall tonight, and one object hung up has never once been the same as saying you will never leave. The Spirit of God is the one who is present when a family marks a place, and Jeremiah 29:7 has exiles told to seek the good of the city they were carried to.

And put it where people will see it, not in a back room. The front room, the hall, wherever somebody standing in the doorway would look.

That placement is the whole point. What is being changed is not the wall. It is what the house says about the people in it, and it says it to visitors and it says it to the children and it says it to you.

And notice how it feels for the first day or two. Slightly exposed is normal. That feeling is the readiness objecting, and it passes, usually inside a week.

You have permission to be visibly from somewhere and visibly here at the same time, and one photograph on a wall has never once been a statement that anybody has forgotten where they came from. It is written in Jeremiah that the peace of the people was bound up with the peace of the place, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that room with you.
