I See My Own Hands Every Day

You put a shelf up in the kitchen in March and something odd happened.

It is not a good shelf. It is about a quarter of an inch off level at one end and one of the brackets is not quite where it should be, and you know exactly where every flaw in it is.

And you look at it every single day, on purpose, and you feel something about it that you have not been able to explain to anybody.

Because that room is different now, and the shelf is not the reason. There are three hundred objects in that kitchen and every one of them arrived from somewhere else, and now there is one that did not.

Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and neither is having only one thing in a house that you made. This article is not a complaint about that. It is about what the one thing is actually doing, and about doing it again.

Establish thou the work of our hands

There is a prayer at the end of Psalm 90 that asks for something specific about ordinary work.

And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it. (Psalm 90:17, King James Version)

Notice what is being asked for. Not more work. Not better skill. That the work of our hands would be established, which means made to stand, made to last, given permanence.

And notice that Moses says it twice in the same verse. Establish the work of our hands, and then again, the work of our hands establish thou it. He repeats it because it matters to him.

You have a prayer in Scripture asking God to make ordinary handwork last, and one shelf a quarter inch off level has never once been beneath what that verse is asking for. Psalm 90:17 puts the work of human hands in front of God twice in one sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as value rather than as a nice thought.

And look at what comes just before it. Let the beauty of the Lord be upon us. The beauty and the handwork are in the same breath, asked for together.

You are living in a house where something is now established that was not there before, and a thing made by the person who lives somewhere has never once been the same as a thing bought for it. The Spirit of God is the one who puts weight on ordinary making, and it is written in Psalm 90 that the work of the hands is asked about twice in one verse.

Why one made thing changes a room

Here is the mechanism, and it is worth knowing because it is repeatable.

Every object in a normal house is a decision somebody else made, executed by somebody else, in a factory, for a general person. It is fine. It works. It says nothing about anybody.

A made thing is different in one specific way. It carries a decision that was made in that room, about that wall, by the person standing in it. And it carries the evidence of the making, including the quarter of an inch.

So when you look at it, you are not looking at a shelf. You are looking at proof that a decision happened here and that a pair of hands acted on it.

You have one object in that house carrying evidence of a decision made in the room it sits in, and a visible flaw has never once weakened what a made thing says. It is written in Psalm 90:17 that the work of the hands is what gets asked about, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a man see what an ordinary shelf is actually doing.

And here is the part worth understanding about the quarter of an inch. It is not despite the flaw. It is partly because of it.

A perfectly level shelf could have come from anywhere. The quarter of an inch is the signature. It is the specific thing that makes it that shelf, in that kitchen, made by that man, on that Saturday in March.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Making is yours. Structure and services are not. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly, and keep your making to the things that hold books and coats.

You are entirely right to keep the making inside the safe category, and building small things has never once been a smaller kind of building. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a man peace about a line, and Scripture asks for the establishing of the work of the hands rather than for the size of it.

Make one more, where you will see it

So here is the ask, and the last part of it is the one that matters.

Make or fix one visible thing this week and leave it where you will see it daily.

Not in the garage. Not in a cupboard. Somewhere you pass several times a day without planning to.

You are able to make one more thing this week, and a second made object in a house has never once mattered less than the first one did. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in ordinary making, and Psalm 90:17 asks twice for the work of human hands to be established.

Keep it small and keep it useful. A hook. A small shelf. A bench for the yard. Something mended that was going to be thrown out. The test is whether it will be looked at daily, not whether it is impressive.

And here is why daily matters. What the first shelf did was not done in the making. It was done in the four hundred times it has been looked at since.

Every one of those glances is a small repeated message, and the message is: a person who makes things lives here. That accumulates, and after enough of it, it stops being a message and becomes simply true.

You have permission to fill a house with evidence of your own hands, and a hook you made has never once been worth less than something bought. It is written in Psalm 90 that Moses asked twice in one verse for the work of the hands to stand, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that kitchen with you.
