There Was No Man To Measure Against

Everybody else has a story, and yours is a blank space.

They talk about their father's shed. They say things like: my dad always used to say. They have a way of doing something that came from somebody, and they know exactly where it came from, and they mention it without noticing they are mentioning it.

You have none of that.

Not a difficult father. Not a hard one you could resent, which at least gives a man something to push against. Just an absence, and no method, and no voice, and no Saturday mornings to be angry about.

And there is a specific loneliness in that which almost nobody names, because the version everybody understands is the bad father. Nobody has a script for a blank page.

Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw. And a man who was handed nothing did not lose anything through his own doing, and starting from nothing at forty is not a slower version of a normal life. It is a different route, and it is a legitimate one.

A father of the fatherless

There is a line in Psalm 68 that names this directly, and the placement of it is the point.

A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. (Psalm 68:5, King James Version)

Notice that this is not offered as a consolation prize. It is a description of who God is, sitting in the middle of a psalm about His power and His going out before His people.

Father of the fatherless is not a role God takes on reluctantly when a human one fails. It is one of the names by which He describes Himself, in His own holy habitation, in the same breath as everything else about Him.

You have a name of God written for exactly your position, and having no father to inherit from has never once put a man outside the ordinary provision of heaven. Psalm 68:5 puts that title in the middle of a psalm about God's own majesty, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that land as identity rather than as a kindness offered to a special case.

And notice the word father rather than helper or provider. Father is a word about where somebody comes from and what gets handed to them.

You are being handed something rather than only helped, and a blank page has never once meant that nothing is available to be written on it. The Spirit of God is the one who supplies what a man was never given, and it is written in Psalm 68 that the fatherless have a Father named in the same sentence as God's own dwelling.

What a blank page is actually for

Here is the thing about the blank page that nobody says, because everybody is busy being sorry about it.

A man with an inherited method spends a good deal of his life negotiating with it. He does things the way his father did them, and half of those ways are good and half of them are simply what one particular man happened to do in nineteen seventy four. And it takes most people until about fifty to work out which half is which.

That negotiation is not yours. There is nothing to unlearn, and nothing to be loyal to, and no voice arriving to say that is not how we do it.

That does not make the blank page a gift, and I am not going to insult you by calling it one. It cost you something real. But it is not only a loss, and it has one specific property that an inheritance does not have.

You have nothing to unlearn and nobody to argue with, and a page with nothing on it has never once been the same as a man with nothing in him. It is written in Psalm 68:5 that God names Himself the father of the fatherless in His own habitation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can show a man what he actually has rather than only what is missing.

And here is the practical form of that. Everything in this house is going to be done a particular way, and you are the one who decides what that way is. Not inherited. Chosen. For the first time in your family as far back as anybody can see.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. One of the first things to decide is where the line sits, and it is the same line for everybody. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly, and let that be a rule you made on purpose rather than one you absorbed.

You are entirely right to set a hard boundary deliberately, and a rule chosen rather than inherited has never once been a weaker rule. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a man peace about a line, and Scripture puts the fathering of the fatherless among the things God says about Himself.

Decide one thing about how it is done here

So here is the ask, and the second half of it is what makes it different from any other job.

Do one job tonight, and decide one thing about how it gets done in this house.

The job first, and small. Then, out loud, a decision. Something ordinary. In this house we put the tools away when we are finished. In this house we say what went wrong out loud. In this house we do it twice if it comes out badly the first time.

You are able to make one rule for your own household tonight, and a method that starts with you has never once been worth less than one that came down a family. The Spirit of God is the one who supplies what nobody handed over, and Psalm 68:5 names God as father to exactly the person with nobody behind him.

Say it out loud, because a rule that is only in your head is not a rule, it is a preference. And write it down if there is anybody else in that house, because that is how a thing becomes the way we do it rather than the way one man does it.

And here is the part worth sitting with. That decision is now the first line on a page, and there was no page at all a week ago.

You have permission to be the beginning of something rather than the continuation of it, and starting a method has never once been a lesser thing than receiving one. It is written in Psalm 68 that God is a father of the fatherless in His own holy habitation, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that room with you.
