What He Passed OnEcclesiastes 2:18

I Inherited The House And The Unfinished Jobs

This message is for the woman who was left a house with half done work in every room, and cannot tell whether finishing what he started honors him or erases him

There is a strip of trim in the hallway that stops two feet short.

There is a wall with two coats on one half and one coat on the other. There is a door frame he sanded and never painted, and a light fitting with the wires capped and taped and no fitting on it, and a shelf with two brackets up and no board.

He was always in the middle of something. That was who he was. And then he was not here, and every one of those middles stopped exactly where it stopped.

And you cannot decide what to do with any of it.

Finishing it feels like painting over him. Leaving it feels like living in a house that is quietly falling behind. And there is no version where the thing gets finished and it is still his.

Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw. And there is no right answer waiting to be found here that you have simply failed to think of. This is genuinely hard, and it is hard for everybody it happens to.

I Inherited The House And The Unfinished Jobs

I must leave it unto the man that shall be after me

There is a passage in Ecclesiastes where Solomon says out loud the thing nobody says.

Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me. (Ecclesiastes 2:18, King James Version)

That is an honest, uncomfortable sentence, and God left it in the book without softening it.

Every person who builds anything eventually hands it to somebody who did not build it. And the one who receives it did not choose the shape it arrives in, and cannot ask any questions about it, and has to do something with it anyway.

You have been handed a position Scripture describes plainly and does not tidy up, and receiving somebody's unfinished work has never once been a thing you were supposed to know how to handle. Ecclesiastes 2:18 states the handover honestly and leaves the discomfort in, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as company rather than as a lecture about legacy.

And notice what Solomon does not do. He does not tell the man who comes after what to do with it. There is no instruction attached anywhere in that passage.

You are not under an instruction that somebody forgot to leave you, and the absence of guidance has never once meant that any choice you make is the wrong one. The Spirit of God is the one who gives peace where no rule was given, and it is written in Ecclesiastes that the handing over is simply what happens under the sun.

Both of them can be true

Here is the way out of the deadlock, and it is not a compromise, it is an observation.

This has been treated as one decision about the whole house. It is not. It is thirty separate decisions about thirty separate things, and they do not all have to go the same way.

Some of that work is simply unfinished work. The trim that stops short is not a message. He would have finished it in April if April had come. Finishing it is not painting over anybody, it is doing the next thing he was going to do.

And some of it is not like that at all. The pencil marks on the frame in his handwriting. The way he stacked something. A thing that is more him than it is a job.

You have thirty decisions rather than one, and a house full of unfinished work has never once required a single policy applied to all of it. It is written in Ecclesiastes 2:18 that the work passes to the one who comes after with nothing attached, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can separate one thing from another in a room full of both.

And here is the thing I would say about the grief in it, because it deserves saying rather than solving. Every one of those half done jobs is a small piece of evidence that he was going to keep living. A man in the middle of painting a wall is a man who expected to be here in two weeks.

That is why they are hard to touch, and it is not sentimentality, and nobody needs to talk you out of it.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Some of what he left half done is not yours to finish. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. That capped light fitting is a call, not a job. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly.

You are entirely right to hand a half finished job to somebody qualified, and paying a professional to complete what he started has never once been a failure to honor him. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person peace about that call, and Scripture puts the handing over as a plain fact and attaches no duty to it.

Finish one and keep one

So here is the ask, and it has two halves on purpose.

Finish one small thing he started, and leave one thing exactly as he left it.

Pick a job that is plainly just a job. The trim, the second coat, the sanded frame. Finish it, properly, and let it be finished.

You are able to complete one piece of somebody else's work, and a job finished after a man has gone has never once been able to take anything away from him. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in both the finishing and the keeping, and Ecclesiastes 2:18 records the handing over without attaching any obligation to it.

And then pick one thing and decide out loud that it stays. The pencil marks. The way something is stacked. The thing that is more him than it is work.

Say it out loud, so it becomes a decision rather than an avoidance. This one stays.

That second half is what makes the first half possible. Once one thing is deliberately kept, finishing another one stops being erasure and becomes what it actually is, which is a woman keeping a house.

You have permission to finish some and keep some, and choosing both has never once been indecision. It is written in Ecclesiastes that the work passes to the one who comes after, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that hallway with you.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over a woman standing in her father's hallway tonight.

You have been left a house full of half done work, and finishing what somebody started has never once been the same as erasing them. I am not telling you what to keep and I am not handing you a verdict on two years. Ecclesiastes 2:18 states the handing over honestly and attaches no instruction to it, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is standing there with you.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have one thing to finish and one thing to keep available tonight, and a house full of paused work has never once been stronger than a woman making two decisions instead of one. The written word puts the work in the hands of the one who comes after and leaves the choosing to her, and the Spirit of God is the one who is going to be there while you stand with the brush.

Finish one. Keep one. Say both out loud.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Trim that stops two feet short of the door, you are an unfinished job and you were never once a message he left me. Ecclesiastes 2:18 says the work passes to the one who comes after, so by the Holy Spirit I finish you tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that finishing it paints over him, you have no claim on a woman standing in her own hallway with a brush. The written word hands the work on and attaches no instruction to it, and by the Spirit of God I am done treating thirty decisions as one.
  3. Father, You let that honest sentence stand about leaving work to the one who comes after, and Your word does not tell her what to do with it. So by Your Spirit I finish one thing tonight and I say out loud that one thing stays.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
