It Finally Feels Like MineJeremiah 29:5

It Still Feels Like Somebody Elses House

This message is for the reader who has lived somewhere for years and still moves through it like a guest, waiting to feel like it belongs to them

You have lived here six years and you still move through it like a guest.

Not consciously. But you put things back exactly where they were. You have never moved a single piece of furniture from where it was on the day you arrived. There is a room you barely use because it seems to be for something else.

And you have been waiting for a feeling to arrive. Some evening when you come in and it is yours, properly, in the way other people seem to feel about their houses.

Six years is a long time to wait for a feeling.

Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and neither is living somewhere carefully. Nobody ever explains that belonging in a place is something that gets made rather than something that shows up.

It Still Feels Like Somebody Elses House

Build ye houses and dwell in them

There is an instruction in Jeremiah written to people who genuinely did not belong where they were, and the order of the words is the whole thing.

Build ye houses, and dwell in them; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them. (Jeremiah 29:5, King James Version)

These were exiles. They had been carried off to a foreign city, and they were expecting to go home shortly, and God tells them plainly that this is going to take a long time.

And then He gives them this. Build. Dwell. Plant. Eat. Four verbs, all of them physical, all of them requiring somebody to put their hands on something.

Notice the order. Build comes before dwell. The making comes first and the belonging comes after it.

You have an instruction in which the building comes before the dwelling, and a feeling of belonging has never once been the thing that arrives first. Jeremiah 29:5 puts four physical verbs in front of people who felt entirely temporary, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as a way forward rather than as a demand to settle down.

And these people had a far better reason than you do to keep everything as it was. They genuinely believed they were leaving. God tells them to build anyway.

You are being told to make something in a place that does not feel like yours, and building in a house has never once required feeling settled in it first. The Spirit of God is the one who moves a person from waiting to doing, and it is written in Jeremiah that the instruction to exiles was to put their hands on the place.

The feeling comes from the hands

Here is the mechanism, and once it is named it is very hard to unsee.

The feeling that a place is yours is not produced by time, and it is not produced by paperwork. It is produced by evidence that somebody has acted on it.

Think about which parts of any house feel most like the people who live there. It is never the parts that came with it. It is the shelf somebody put up. The wall somebody painted. The door that somebody fixed badly and left.

Those things say a person was here and did something, and that is the entire signal.

You have been waiting for a feeling that is produced by action rather than by time, and six years of careful living has never once been able to generate what one afternoon of doing generates. It is written in Jeremiah 29:5 that the building comes before the dwelling, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person which way round a thing actually works.

And here is why the careful living has been working against you. Putting everything back exactly where it was, never moving anything, never marking anything, is a set of behaviors that signal to your own body that this place belongs to somebody else.

That is the evidence of a guest, handed over several times a day, for six years.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Some changes are not yours to make, especially in a rented place. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly, and if you rent, ask the owner in writing first about anything permanent.

You are entirely right to keep the permanent changes inside what you are allowed, and small reversible things have never once counted for less than large ones. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person peace about a boundary, and Scripture puts building and planting in the hands of people who did not own the ground they were standing on.

Do one thing that changes it

So here is the ask, and the word changes is the important one.

Do one thing to this house tonight that changes it, however small.

Not clean. Not tidy. Not put back. Change. Something that will be different when you walk in tomorrow, and that is different because of you.

You are able to change one thing in this house tonight, and one small deliberate change has never once been too little to shift what a room says. The Spirit of God is the one who is present in a small act of making, and Jeremiah 29:5 puts the building in front of the dwelling in plain order.

Move a chair to where you would actually want it. Put one picture up. Paint one small thing. Take a door off a cupboard you keep open anyway. Move the whole table.

The test is simple. Would somebody walking in tomorrow be able to tell that a decision was made here.

And then look at it. Stand in the doorway and look at the thing you changed for about thirty seconds, and let yourself notice that it is different because of a decision you made.

You have permission to leave evidence of yourself in this house, and a chair in a different place has never once been a small thing in a room that has not changed in six years. It is written in Jeremiah that the exiles were told to build and to plant, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that room with you.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over a woman standing in her own front room tonight.

You have lived here for years and it still feels borrowed, and belonging in a place has never once arrived by waiting for it. I am not telling you to love this house and I am not handing you a verdict on six years. Jeremiah 29:5 tells people who were certain they were leaving to build and plant anyway, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is standing there with you.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have one change available tonight that will still be there tomorrow, and six years of putting everything back exactly where it was has never once been stronger than one moved chair. The written word puts building in front of dwelling in the plain order of the sentence, and the Spirit of God is the one who is going to be there when you stand in the doorway and look.

One thing. Changed. Tonight.

Declare this over yourself

  1. House that has felt borrowed for six years, you are four walls and a set of habits, and you were never once waiting to hand me a feeling. Jeremiah 29:5 says build ye houses and dwell in them, so by the Holy Spirit I change one thing in you tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Habit of putting everything back exactly where it was, you have no claim on a woman moving her own couch. The written word puts the building in front of the dwelling in plain order, and by the Spirit of God I am done giving myself the evidence of a guest.
  3. Father, You told people who were certain they were leaving to build and to plant and to eat what they grew. Your word says it plainly in Jeremiah, so by Your Spirit I change one thing in this house tonight, and I stand in the doorway and look at it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
