It Cost Money We Did Not Have

It would be over by now if it had only cost an afternoon.

That is the difference between this and every other job that has gone wrong. A failed attempt usually ends. You clean up, you feel terrible for a week, and then some Tuesday in the following month you notice you have not thought about it in days.

This one has not ended, because it is still going out of the account.

And every month, when it goes, the whole afternoon comes back. Not as a memory. As a bill. And a bill is a very hard thing to forgive yourself for, because it keeps arriving with your name on it.

Let me put this down before we go any further. Not knowing how is not a character flaw. And a person who tried to save the household money and ended up costing it money did something honorable that did not work, and those are two separate facts, and only the first one is about who she is.

Though he fall

There is a line in Psalm 37 about falling that is unusually precise about what does not happen.

Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand. (Psalm 37:24, King James Version)

Notice it does not say he will not fall. The falling is granted. It is in the sentence, and it is not argued with.

What is denied is the second part. Not utterly cast down. Utterly is doing all the work in that verse. There is a fall, and there is a floor, and the psalm says the floor is not the end of the person.

You have a verse that grants the fall and denies the ruin, and a mistake that is still costing money has never once been able to make it utter. Psalm 37:24 puts the word utterly there on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as a boundary rather than as a consolation prize.

And the reason given is not that the person recovers well. It is that the Lord upholdeth him with his hand. The holding is happening during the falling, not afterward.

You are being held through the part that is still going on, and a payment that has not finished has never once meant the holding stopped. The Spirit of God is the one who is present during a thing rather than only after it, and it is written in Psalm 37 that the hand is under the one who is falling.

A bill is not a verdict on a repeat cycle

Here is what I want to separate, because they have been fused since the day the money went.

There is a debt, and it has a size and an end date, and it is being handled. That is a fact and it is finite.

And there is a monthly reminder of a failure, which has no end date at all, because it has attached itself to the payment and will keep arriving as long as the payment does.

Those are two different things that happen on the same day of the month, and one of them is genuinely necessary.

You have been receiving a bill and a verdict on the same date, and a payment leaving an account has never once been required to carry a sentence with it. It is written in Psalm 37:24 that the fall is granted and the utter ruin denied, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can separate two things that have been arriving together.

And here is what makes it heavier still. Money that is short is not only money. It is the thing you could not do this month because of it, and the conversation you had about it, and the small hard look somebody gave that they did not mean to give.

That is real, and I am not going to minimize it, because the tenant of this article is a household where money is genuinely tight and pretending otherwise would be an insult.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Part of what that money bought was the knowledge of where the line is. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional first for those, and start saving for it the week you find out, rather than attempting it and paying twice.

You are entirely right to save for the one that has to be done properly, and waiting with a job named and a date in mind has never once been the same as being stuck. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person peace about waiting, and Scripture puts the upholding hand under the person while the falling is still happening.

Write the date the last payment falls

So here is the ask, and it is a date rather than a repair.

Write down the date the last payment falls, and put it where you can see it.

Go and work it out. Actually work it out, with the real numbers, rather than carrying a vague sense that it goes on forever. Then write that month and year on something and put it on the fridge or inside a cupboard door.

You are able to find out exactly when this ends, and a finite number of remaining payments has never once been the same as a thing that goes on forever. The Spirit of God is the one who brings a shapeless weight into a shape a person can look at, and Psalm 37:24 puts a hard boundary on how far a fall is allowed to go.

Here is why the date works. What is heavy is not the amount. It is the sense that this is now simply part of your life, permanently, a monthly tax on one afternoon. A date on a fridge contradicts that directly, every time you see it.

And when it does arrive, mark it. Do something small and good on that day, on purpose. Because a thing that ends without being noticed does not feel like it has ended.

You have permission to give this an end and mark it when it comes, and one date written down has never once been a trivial answer to a real weight. It is written in Psalm 37 that the one who falls is not utterly cast down, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that kitchen with you.
