I Made It Worse And Had To Pay Anyway

The damage was not the worst part, and you know it.

The worst part was the phone call. And then the man arriving, and looking at it, and doing that thing with his mouth. And then him not saying anything about it, which was somehow worse than if he had.

And then the number, which was more than it would have been if you had simply called him at the start.

That is the piece you are still carrying. Not the wood. Not the wall. The forty minutes in your own house where you stood there while a stranger repaired something you had made worse, and paid him for the privilege.

Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw. A man who attempts something to save money for his household and gets it wrong has done something honorable that did not work, and those are two different facts, and only one of them is true about him.

I will restore the years

There is a promise in Joel about waste, and the thing worth noticing is what God offers to restore.

And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten. (Joel 2:25, King James Version)

Years. Not property. Not the crop. The years.

That is a strange thing to promise, because time does not come back. And yet that is deliberately what is named, because the thing that hurts about a wasted stretch is not only what was lost. It is the sense that the time itself was thrown away.

You have a God who speaks specifically about restoring what feels unrecoverable, and a wasted afternoon has never once been outside what He offers to deal with. Joel 2:25 names the years rather than the harvest, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as generosity rather than as a sentence about what got eaten.

And notice who God is speaking to in that passage. A people whose situation was largely their own doing, and He does not open with an itemized account of how they got there. He opens with restore.

You are standing in front of a God who leads with restoration rather than with the accounting, and a mistake that cost money has never once made anybody ineligible for that. The Spirit of God is the one who starts a conversation somewhere other than the failure, and it is written in Joel that the promise came to people who had every reason to expect a lecture.

What the money actually bought

Here is the accounting nobody has done, and it is worth doing out loud.

That number has been carried as a pure loss. It is not one. Go through it properly.

The attempt cost you materials and an afternoon. The repair cost you the number. That is the debit column, and it is real, and I am not going to talk it down.

Now the other column, which has never once been written. You found out what is behind that wall. You found out which part of that job is the hard part, which almost nobody knows until they try. You watched a professional do the thing you failed at, from four feet away, for forty minutes, which is a form of teaching most people never get. And you found out that the world does not end when a man calls somebody.

You have been reading a page with only one column filled in, and an afternoon that cost money has never once been the same as an afternoon that bought nothing. It is written in Joel 2:25 that God speaks of restoring what looks unrecoverable, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can show a man what he actually came away with.

And there is a third thing in that column, and it is the biggest. Your household got the job done properly. Which was the point the whole time. The route to it was expensive and awkward, and the outcome is exactly what you wanted.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Some of that number was the price of finding out where the line is, and the line is worth knowing. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional first for those. That is not the lesson of your shame. That is the actual rule, and it always was.

You are entirely right to call somebody first next time, and learning where a line sits has never once been an expensive lesson badly learned. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a man peace about a boundary, and Scripture puts the restoring in front of the accounting rather than behind it.

Say the number and say what it bought

So here is the ask, and both halves have to be out loud.

Say out loud what the whole thing actually cost, and then say what it bought.

The number first. The real one, said plainly, not softened and not exaggerated. It cost this much. Say it in a room by yourself if that is easier.

You are able to say a number out loud without it becoming a verdict, and a figure spoken plainly has never once been heavier than a figure carried silently. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the charge out of a fact by letting it be said, and Joel 2:25 puts God's own promise on the ground of what got eaten.

Then the second column, item by item, out loud. This is what it bought. I know what is behind that wall now. I watched a man do it for forty minutes. My family has a working one. I know where my line is.

That second list is what has been missing since the day it happened, and it has never been said because nobody ever suggested that a bad afternoon had a credit column at all.

You have permission to count what you gained as well as what it cost, and an honest accounting has never once been a way of letting yourself off. It is written in Joel that God opens with restoring rather than with the record, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that room with you.
