I Want To Try But I Am Afraid Of Making It Worse

You are not unwilling. That is what nobody understands about this.

People who love you think you are putting it off. You are not putting it off. You have stood in front of that thing more times than any of them know, with the tool in your hand, and turned around and walked away.

Because there is a sentence, and it arrives every time, and it goes: what if I make it worse.

And the terrible thing about that sentence is that it is not stupid. It is true. You might make it worse. Beginners do make things worse. That is a real risk and pretending otherwise would be insulting.

So you wait. Not out of laziness. Out of a completely reasonable wish to start on a day when the conditions are right, when you have more time, when the stakes are lower, when somebody who knows is nearby.

That day has now failed to arrive for four years, and the waiting has quietly become the decision.

Let me say the thing this whole article stands on. Not knowing how is not a character flaw. Being frightened of ruining something is not a character flaw either. Both of those are ordinary, and neither of them says one word about who you are.

He that observeth the wind

There is a line in Ecclesiastes about farming that is really about this exact thing.

He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap. (Ecclesiastes 11:4, King James Version)

That is not a rebuke of caution. It is a description of a real trap, said plainly.

A farmer who watches the sky for the perfect day never gets seed into the ground, because there is always something in the sky. Too much wind. Too much cloud. A better window probably coming Thursday. Every one of those observations is accurate, and taken together they produce an empty field.

You have been reading the sky honestly and accurately, and a set of true observations has never once added up to a reason not to begin. Ecclesiastes 11:4 names watching the weather as the thing that empties a field, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that land as release rather than as an accusation of cowardice.

And notice how the chapter goes on. It says sow in the morning and in the evening, because you do not know which will prosper. That is not a promise that everything works. It is permission to act without certainty.

You are allowed to act without knowing how it will turn out, and needing a guarantee first has never once been a requirement God put on anybody. The Spirit of God is the one who gives a person courage without giving them certainty, and it is written in Ecclesiastes that the sowing goes ahead precisely because the outcome is unknown.

Make the worst case small

Here is the practical move, and it is not bravery. Bravery is unreliable and it runs out.

Instead of getting braver, make the worst case smaller.

Right now, in your head, the worst case is unbounded. It is the thing breaks, and then something behind it breaks, and then it costs money you do not have, and then somebody has to come and see what you did. That is not a plan. That is a fog, and fog is what freezes people.

So say the worst case out loud, in one sentence, with an actual limit on it. If I get this wrong, the door hangs crooked and I have to take it off again. If I get this wrong, I have a hole in a wall that filler covers.

You have permission to find out how big this really is, and the true size of a risk has never once been more frightening than the fog around it. It is written in Ecclesiastes 11:4 that watching the sky is what stops the sowing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a shapeless dread into one plain sentence a person can look at.

Then pick the smallest version of the job. Not the job. The smallest version of it.

If the cabinet door is the job, the smallest version is taking one screw out and putting it back. If painting the room is the job, the smallest version is one square foot behind the door where nobody looks. If the shelf is the job, the smallest version is hanging it in the closet instead of the hallway.

You are able to shrink this until the worst case is something you can carry, and choosing a small version has never once been the same as not really trying. The Spirit of God is the one who is with a person in a small beginning, and Ecclesiastes 11 puts the sowing ahead of the certainty rather than behind it.

Now the limit, and I put it here rather than in a footer. There is a category where the worst case cannot be made small, and those are not yours. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly. On those the fear is not a trap, it is information, and it is right.

You are entirely right to stop where the worst case cannot be bounded, and knowing which fear to obey has never once been a smaller kind of wisdom than pushing through one. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person clarity about which is which, and Scripture names the empty field rather than the sensible caution as the problem.

Tonight, badly

So here is the ask, and the word badly is doing real work in it.

Do the smallest version of the job tonight, and let it be bad.

Not carefully. Not once you have looked things up. Tonight, with what is in the house, in whatever mood you are in, at whatever hour it is when you finish reading this.

You are able to start something imperfectly tonight, and a crooked result has never once been able to say anything about the worth of the person who made it. The Holy Spirit is the one who meets a person in an attempt rather than only in a success, and it is written in Ecclesiastes that the one watching the weather is the one who never sows.

And when it is done, stop. Do not fix the bad part. Do not do the next thing. Leave it exactly as it came out and go and do something else.

That instruction matters more than it sounds. What you are practicing tonight is not the skill. It is the experience of having started something and survived it, and that experience is the only thing that ever dissolves the sentence.

You have been kept out of a small job by a fog rather than by an inability, and four years of waiting has never once been stronger than one imperfect evening. Scripture puts the sowing before the certainty and never once the other way round, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in the room with you.
