The First AttemptJames 1:5

I Stop At The Part Where I Have To Decide

This message is for the man who begins well and halts exactly where a choice has to be made with nobody there to confirm it, and has three jobs frozen at that same point

Go and look at the three unfinished jobs in that house, and notice where each one stopped.

The shelf that got as far as the brackets being held up against the wall. The door that came off and never went back. The bench with three legs on it in the garage.

Every one of them is stopped at a decision.

Not at a hard step. Not at a step you did not understand. At the point where you had to choose something with nothing to confirm the choice against. How high. Which side. Which of these two ways round. Whether that is close enough.

And every time you get there, something in you says: I need somebody who knows to tell me which one. And there is nobody, and so the whole thing stops, and it stops looking like a job you could not do.

Before we go on, let me put this down. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and neither is wanting somebody to confirm a choice. That is not indecisiveness. That is the completely ordinary experience of somebody who was never handed the small rules that make these choices easy for other people.

I Stop At The Part Where I Have To Decide

He giveth to all men liberally

There is a promise in James about exactly this, and the tone of the second half is what matters.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. (James 1:5, King James Version)

Upbraideth not is the phrase to sit with. It means He does not scold you for asking. He does not sigh. He does not point out that you should have known this already, or that the same question came up last year, or that a man of your age might be expected to have picked it up somewhere.

That clause is in there because God knew people would expect exactly that, and He put it in writing so that nobody would have to wonder.

You have a God who gives without one word of reproach attached, and asking about something small has never once cost anybody His patience. James 1:5 says liberally and upbraideth not in the same breath, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that land as welcome rather than as a formality.

And notice the scale of it. If any of you lack wisdom. It does not say wisdom about eternal matters. It says wisdom, plainly, which includes how high to hang a shelf in a hallway you actually live in.

You are allowed to bring an ordinary household decision to God, and a question about a bracket has never once been beneath what He said He would answer. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a small choice possible without a human standing beside it, and it is written in James that the giving is liberal and the reproach is absent.

The rule nobody gave you

Here is the practical piece, and it is the thing that would have unstuck all three jobs years ago.

People who do this easily are not making better decisions than you. They are using small rules they were handed at some point, usually by somebody standing beside them, and the rules are mostly arbitrary.

Shelves go at about eye height or about waist height and almost never in between. Hinges go on the side the door already swung from. Two coats of the thinner thing beats one of the thicker. When two options are close, take the one that is easier to undo.

None of those are laws of nature. They are conventions that remove a decision so that the work can continue, and the whole of their value is that they end the standing still.

You have been missing arbitrary conventions rather than judgment, and the absence of a small rule has never once meant the absence of the ability to choose. It is written in James 1:5 that the wisdom is given liberally and without reproach, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can settle a small choice in a quiet hallway.

And here is the one that unlocks the most jobs. When two options are genuinely close, the difference between them is smaller than the cost of standing there. Pick either one. The person who picks the worse of two close options and finishes has done immeasurably better than the person who picks neither.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Some decisions are not close, and those are not yours to make. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly. That decision is already made and it does not need thinking about at all.

You are entirely right to have some choices settled in advance and permanently, and having a fixed line has never once been a smaller kind of decisiveness. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person peace about a boundary, and Scripture puts the asking and the giving together with no reproach in between.

Decide out loud, then write it

So here is the ask, and it takes about ninety seconds.

Go and make the one decision, out loud, and write it down before you touch anything.

Stand at the frozen job. Say the decision into the room, plainly, as a sentence. The shelf goes at eye height. The hinge goes on the left. Close enough is close enough.

You are able to make one small decision out loud in an empty hallway, and a choice spoken into a room has never once needed another person to confirm it. The Spirit of God is the one who gives wisdom to the person who asks without adding a lecture to it, and James 1:5 says liberally and upbraideth not in one line.

Then write it on something, and leave it beside the job.

That second half is what keeps it decided. An unwritten decision quietly reopens overnight, and tomorrow you are standing in the same place having the same argument. A written one is finished, and the next time you walk past, the argument does not restart, and you get to do the work instead.

You have permission to settle it yourself and put it in writing, and one decision made alone has never once been worth less than one confirmed by somebody else. It is written in James that God gives to all men liberally and reproaches nobody, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that hallway with you.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being said over a man standing in his own hallway tonight.

You have three jobs stopped at the same point, and a decision made with nobody to confirm it has never once been beyond you. I am not calling you indecisive and I am not handing you a verdict on two years. James 1:5 promises wisdom given liberally with the reproach specifically ruled out, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is standing there with you.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have one sentence and one piece of paper available tonight, and a decision that has reopened eleven times has never once been stronger than a man who says it out loud and writes it down. The written word puts the giving and the absence of scolding in the same line, and the Spirit of God is the one who is going to be there when you decide.

Say it out loud. Write it down. Then work.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Point where all three of these stopped, you are one small choice and you were never once proof that I cannot finish anything. James 1:5 says God gives wisdom liberally and upbraideth not, so by the Holy Spirit I decide it out loud tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Need for somebody who knows to confirm it, you have no claim on a man standing in his own hallway with a pen. The written word rules the reproach out in the same line as the giving, and by the Spirit of God I am done reopening the same decision every time I walk past.
  3. Father, You said You give to all men liberally and that You do not scold anybody for asking. Your word says upbraideth not, so by Your Spirit I make the choice out loud tonight, and I write it down and leave it beside the job.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
