I Want It To Look Like The Picture

The picture is beautiful, and that is the problem.

Perfect corners. The wood is exactly the right shade. The light in the photograph is coming through a window that does not exist in your apartment, and the whole thing looks like it took a serene afternoon.

And you have decided, without ever saying it out loud, that you are not going to start until you can make that.

So it has been eight months. The wood is still in a corner. And every time you look at the picture again, which is often, you get a small hit of something that feels like planning and is actually just longing.

Before we go any further, let me put the true thing down. Not knowing how is not a character flaw. And wanting something to be beautiful is not vanity, it is a good instinct. What has gone wrong here is not your character. It is an unfair comparison that nobody warned you about.

Comparing themselves among themselves

There is a line in Second Corinthians where Paul says something about comparison that is unusually blunt.

But they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. (2 Corinthians 10:12, King James Version)

Not wise is a strong phrase for Paul, and notice what he is describing. Not people being envious. People running a measurement that does not work.

He is saying the whole operation is faulty. Not sinful first, faulty first. Measuring yourself against another person produces a number that means nothing, because the two things being compared are not the same kind of thing.

You have been running a measurement that Scripture itself calls unwise rather than a measurement that says something true, and a comparison that fails has never once been a report on the person running it. Second Corinthians 10:12 names the whole operation as faulty, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as release rather than as a rebuke about envy.

And here is what makes the comparison in front of you especially unfair. That photograph is not somebody's first shelf. It is their four hundredth. It is also lit, staged, cropped, and taken from the one angle where the gap does not show.

You are comparing a beginning to a finished performance, and holding a first attempt beside a four hundredth has never once produced a fair number. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the ruler out of a person's hand, and it is written in Second Corinthians that measuring by one another is not wisdom at all.

What the photograph is not showing

Here is what is missing from that image, and it is most of the story.

The three earlier versions that went in a dumpster. The cut that was wrong by an eighth. The forty minutes of swearing at a bracket. The corner on the right hand side, which is not in the frame because it did not come out.

Every finished photograph on earth is the survivor of a process, and the process is invisible by design, because nobody photographs the middle of anything.

You have been looking at a survivor and calling it a starting line, and an invisible process has never once meant that the person in that photograph began where you are being asked to begin. It is written in Second Corinthians 10:12 that comparing among ourselves is not wise, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can put a real process back behind a finished picture.

There is a second thing, and it is about your own first one. You already know what it will look like: slightly off, a bit rough where the two pieces meet, obviously homemade.

And here is what nobody tells young women in particular: obviously homemade is not a failure state. It is a category. There are people who would pay money for obviously homemade, and there are people who put a perfect one in their house and never once look at it, because a thing you did not make has nothing to say to you.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly. No photograph on the internet changes that line and nobody who does this well would ever suggest it did.

You are entirely right to leave a whole category alone, and refusing a job that belongs to somebody licensed has never once been the same as refusing to begin. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person calm about a boundary, and Scripture puts the fault in the measuring rather than in the maker.

Make the one that will not photograph

So here is the ask, and the second half of it is the part that does the work.

Make the version that will not photograph well, and do not put a picture of it anywhere.

Build it. Hang it. Use it. And then deliberately do not photograph it, do not post it, do not show it to anybody who was not going to see it anyway.

You are able to make something that exists only for the room it is in, and a thing nobody sees has never once counted for less than a thing everybody does. The Spirit of God is the one who gives value to work no audience will assess, and Second Corinthians 10:12 names the measuring of ourselves against each other as the thing that is not wise.

That instruction is not modesty. It is surgery. As long as the finished thing has to survive a photograph, the photograph is the standard, and the standard is somebody's four hundredth attempt with good light.

Take the camera out of the job and what is left is a shelf, in your apartment, holding your books, made by you. That is the whole thing, and it turns out to be enough.

You have permission to make something purely for use, and one uneven shelf that holds books has never once been worth less than a beautiful one you did not make. It is written in Second Corinthians that measuring among ourselves is not wisdom, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that room with you.
