I Stopped Apologizing When People Come In

There is a script, and it starts about four seconds after the door opens.

Excuse the mess. Ignore that, it has been like that for ages. We are going to sort that out at some point. Do not look at the kitchen.

You do it warmly. You do it with a laugh in it. And you have done it for so many years that you no longer hear yourself doing it, and neither does anybody else, which is exactly the problem.

Because the script is not hospitality. It is getting there first.

If you say it before they can think it, then nobody has judged you, because the judgment was yours and you delivered it yourself, in your own hallway, at the door, before anybody had taken their coat off.

Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and neither is having a house with things wrong in it. The script is not modesty and it is not manners. It is a defense, and it is worth looking at.

Not the spirit of bondage again to fear

There is a sentence in Romans about two different ways of being in a house, and the contrast is exact.

For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. (Romans 8:15, King James Version)

Two spirits are being named. One is bondage and fear. The other is adoption, which is a word about belonging in a household as a child rather than as a servant.

And notice what a child in a house does that a servant does not. A child does not apologize for the state of the kitchen. It is their kitchen. They have never once thought about it.

You have been offered a place in a house as a daughter rather than as somebody on approval, and belonging somewhere has never once required the house to be presentable first. Romans 8:15 sets adoption directly against fear, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as a standing rather than as a thing to be earned.

And the word again is worth having. Not received the spirit of bondage again. It assumes a person could slip back into an old posture without meaning to, which is precisely what a script running for eleven years is.

You are able to stop taking up an old posture at your own front door, and slipping back into a defense has never once meant a person did not have the standing. The Spirit of God is the one who reminds somebody where they actually live, and it is written in Romans that the adoption is what was received rather than the fear.

What the script does to the person hearing it

Here is the part nobody thinks about, and it is the reason this is worth changing.

When somebody walks into a house and the first thing they hear is an apology, they now have a job. They have to say no, it is lovely, it is fine, do not be silly. Every time. Within four seconds of arriving.

So the script does not only cost you. It puts a small piece of work on every person who comes to that door, and the warmer they are, the more work it is.

And there is a second effect. The apology tells them where to look. Nobody was looking at the kitchen until it was mentioned.

You have been handing every visitor a small task and a direction to look in, and a disclaimer said warmly has never once made a guest more comfortable. It is written in Romans 8:15 that what was received was adoption rather than fear, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person what a habit is actually doing in a room.

And here is the hardest part to hear, so let me say it gently. Your children have learned the script.

They will do it in their own first homes. They will apologize for a perfectly ordinary flat at twenty three, in the first four seconds, with a laugh in it, and they will have no idea where they got it.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Saying nothing about the state of a room is different from saying nothing about a hazard. If something in that house is genuinely dangerous, say so plainly. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly.

You are entirely right to name a real hazard out loud to a visitor, and telling somebody about a genuine danger has never once been the same as apologizing for a kitchen. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person clarity between those two, and Scripture puts the adoption in place of the fear rather than in place of good sense.

Let one person in and say nothing

So here is the ask, and it is a thing you do not do.

Let one person come in and say nothing about the house at all.

Open the door. Say hello properly. Take their coat, or their bag, or the thing they brought. Walk them through. And do not mention the house once.

You are able to greet somebody at your own door without a disclaimer, and four seconds of ordinary welcome has never once been less honest than an apology. The Spirit of God is the one who lets a person stand in their own hallway as somebody who belongs there, and Romans 8:15 puts adoption in the place where fear used to be.

Here is what will happen, and you should have it in advance. The pull will be enormous. It arrives at about second three and it is physical.

Let it come and let it go past. Say something else instead. Ask about their journey, or say it is good to see them, or offer them a drink. Any ordinary sentence fills the same four seconds and does something completely different with them.

And notice what happens to the conversation afterward, because it changes. A conversation that does not begin with somebody being reassured starts somewhere better and stays there.

You have permission to be welcomed in your own house rather than to be assessed in it, and one visit with no script has never once been a way of pretending. It is written in Romans that the spirit received was adoption rather than bondage, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that hallway with you.
