It has been eleven years, and you can still see the whole afternoon.
The thing you were fixing. The point at which it went. Somebody's face, or somebody's silence, or the sound of it. The rest of that day, and how quiet the evening was.
And in eleven years since, you have not picked up a tool. Not once. Not for anything.
Nobody has ever mentioned it. There was never a decision, never an announcement, no moment where you said out loud that you were finished with all that. It simply became true, the way things do, and now it is simply how you are.
Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw. And a bad Saturday is a bad Saturday. It is not a finding, it is not a rule, and one afternoon has never once been given the authority to make decisions for a man for the next eleven years.

Remember ye not the former things
There is an instruction in Isaiah that sounds almost impossible until you look at what it is actually asking.
Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. (Isaiah 43:18, King James Version)
Remember there does not mean forget. Nobody can be commanded to forget, and God does not ask for it. The word carries the sense of dwelling on something, of turning it over, of letting it be the thing you consult.
And consider, in the second half, is a weighing word. It means to think a thing over in order to decide by it.
So the instruction is not: pretend that Saturday did not happen. The instruction is: stop consulting it.
You have been consulting an afternoon rather than remembering it, and one bad Saturday has never once been fit to be the thing a man decides by. Isaiah 43:18 uses words about dwelling and weighing rather than about forgetting, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as freedom rather than as a demand to erase something.
And look at the next verse in that passage, because it explains the whole instruction. God says He is doing a new thing, and asks whether they will perceive it. The reason for not consulting the old is that something else is going on that will be missed otherwise.
You are being asked to look up rather than to look away, and putting down an old afternoon has never once required pretending it never happened. The Spirit of God is the one who turns a man's attention forward, and it is written in Isaiah that the reason given is a new thing already springing up.
What eleven years actually cost
Here is the accounting, and it is worth doing plainly because nobody has ever done it out loud.
Eleven years of not picking up a tool is not eleven years of avoiding one bad feeling. It is every small job in that house that somebody else did or nobody did. It is the money paid to people for things that were twenty minute jobs. It is a child who grew all the way up in a house where their father did not do that.
And none of that was chosen. That is the part worth saying carefully. Nobody sat down in that year and decided any of it. A rule got written by an afternoon, and then it ran quietly for a decade without ever being reviewed.
You have been living under a rule that was never actually made, and something that installed itself without a decision has never once been the same as a choice. It is written in Isaiah 43:18 that the instruction is to stop consulting the former thing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can bring an unreviewed rule up into the light where a man can look at it.
And here is the good news buried inside eleven years. Nothing about your hands changed in that time. They are the same hands. They did not get worse at anything, because they were not doing anything. Whatever you could do at forty one, you can still do at fifty two, and probably slightly better, because a man knows more about being careful than he did.
Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Whatever that Saturday was, if it was in the category that should never have been yours, then the rule was right about that one job and wrong about all the others. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly, and let the rule apply to that and to nothing else.
You are entirely right to keep a permanent line around the dangerous work, and one correct boundary has never once justified a rule that covers every job in a house. The Holy Spirit is the one who helps a man scope a rule properly, and Scripture asks him to stop weighing by the old thing rather than to stop being careful.
Four minutes, then put it down
So here is the ask, and it is smaller than anything else in this article by design.
Pick up a tool tonight for four minutes and put it down again.
Not a job. Not a project. Pick up a screwdriver, or whatever is in that box, and hold it, and do one small thing with it, and then put it back.
You are able to hold a tool in your hand for four minutes, and eleven years of not touching one has never once made the next four minutes harder than they actually are. The Spirit of God is the one who meets a man at the smallest possible beginning, and Isaiah 43:18 asks a person to stop consulting the old thing precisely so that something else can be seen.
Here is why four minutes and not a job. What has been stopping you is not difficulty. It is that picking up a tool means walking back into an afternoon, and eleven years have made that afternoon large.
Four minutes is short enough that the afternoon does not have time to fully arrive. And when the tool goes back down, something quiet has happened: one has been handled, recently, and it went nowhere near the way the memory said it would.
Do it again the next night if you want to. Or do not. Tonight has done its whole work either way.
You have permission to pick something up and put it straight back down, and four minutes with a screwdriver has never once been a token gesture after eleven years. It is written in Isaiah that the former things are not to be weighed by, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing on that porch with you.
So here is what I believe is being said over a man standing in his own garage tonight.
You have let one Saturday run a decade, and a single afternoon has never once had the authority to write a rule over a man's life. I am not telling you that day did not matter and I am not handing you a verdict on eleven years. Isaiah 43:18 asks a person to stop consulting the former thing rather than to pretend it never happened, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is standing there with you.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have the same hands you always had and four minutes tonight, and eleven years of a rule nobody ever made has never once been stronger than a man picking up a screwdriver and putting it down. The written word turns a person's weighing forward because something new is already going on, and the Spirit of God is the one who is going to be there for the four minutes.
Pick it up. Four minutes. Put it down.
Declare this over yourself
- Saturday that has been making my decisions for eleven years, you were one afternoon, and you were never once entitled to write a rule. Isaiah 43:18 says remember ye not the former things, so by the Holy Spirit I pick up a tool for four minutes tonight, in the name of Jesus.
- Rule that installed itself without anybody deciding it, you have no claim on a man standing in his own garage. The written word turns the weighing forward because something new is already going on, and by the Spirit of God I am done consulting one afternoon about every job in this house.
- Father, You did not ask anybody to forget, and Your word says neither consider the things of old, which is about weighing and not about erasing. So by Your Spirit I hold a tool for four minutes tonight, and then I put it back where it lives.
