I Do Not Want To Be Watched Doing It Badly

If the house were empty you would have done it by now.

That is worth sitting with, because it tells you exactly what the obstacle is. It is not the job. You know roughly what the job involves. You have the tool.

It is that your wife is in the kitchen and your son is at the table, and that if it goes wrong they will be forty feet away when it does.

Not that they would say anything. They would not. Your wife would say nothing at all, which is somehow worse, and your son would look up for two seconds and then look back down, and those two seconds would live in you for a week.

So the job waits for an empty house, and an empty house is rare, and it has been eleven months.

Before anything else, let me put this down. Not knowing how is not a character flaw. And being unwilling to be watched failing is not weakness either. It is one of the most human things there is, and every single person reading this has a version of it about something.

Do I seek to please men

There is a line in Galatians where Paul asks himself a question out loud, and the useful thing about it is how blunt it is.

For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? (Galatians 1:10, King James Version)

Paul is writing about his own ministry, and he is asking whose approval is actually steering him. That is the question, and he asks it about himself rather than about somebody else.

And notice that he treats it as a live question. He does not assume he is above it. A man who had been through everything Paul had been through still stops to ask which audience he is playing to.

You have a Bible that treats the pull of an audience as an ordinary thing a serious person has to keep checking, and being aware of who is watching has never once been a defect in a man. Galatians 1:10 has Paul ask the question about himself in the open, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as company rather than as an accusation.

The question is not who is in the room. The question is who is steering.

You are allowed to have people in the house and not have them holding the wheel, and the presence of an audience has never once been the same as being ruled by one. The Spirit of God is the one who quietly moves a person's weight off what a room might think, and it is written in Galatians that a man asked out loud whose approval he was working for.

What the two seconds are actually made of

Here is what I want to look at closely, because the imagined moment is doing all the work.

The picture of it going wrong in front of them is not a picture of them thinking anything about a hinge. It is a picture of something much larger and much older. A boy being watched by an adult and coming up short. A man in a family, being seen as not the one who can.

That is not a picture of your kitchen. That is a picture from a long time ago, wearing your kitchen as a costume.

You have been managing an old room rather than the one you are standing in, and a memory borrowing your kitchen has never once been the same as the people actually in it. It is written in Galatians 1:10 that a man asked plainly whose approval he was seeking, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can separate a present room from an old one.

And here is what your family is actually running, which is nothing like the version in your head. Your wife is thinking about whether there is milk. Your son is on his phone. If it goes wrong, the total attention it receives in that house is about four seconds and it is gone by dinner.

Nobody in that room is holding a file on anybody. The file is entirely private, and it has been kept very carefully for eleven months.

Now the limit, and I say it here in the body rather than in a footer. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly. And do that in front of your family without embarrassment, because a man who knows what he is not going to attempt is showing them something worth seeing.

You are entirely right to refuse a dangerous job out loud in front of everybody, and naming a limit where people can hear it has never once made a man smaller in his own house. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person calm about a boundary, and Scripture puts the whole matter on which audience a man is serving rather than on whether one exists.

Say one sentence first

So here is the ask, and the sentence at the front of it is what makes the rest possible.

Start the job with somebody in the house, and say one sentence out loud before you begin.

The sentence is this, or something close to it. I have not done this before and it might go wrong.

You are able to say nine words out loud before you pick up a tool, and telling a room in advance has never once cost a man anything he was afraid of losing. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the charge out of a moment by letting it be said first, and Galatians 1:10 has a man put the question of whose approval he is chasing out into the open.

That sentence does something specific and it is worth understanding. It removes the thing you are actually afraid of, which is not failing. It is being seen failing while pretending you expected to succeed.

Say it in advance and the pretending is gone, and once the pretending is gone the failing is just a Tuesday.

And it does something else. Your son hears a grown man announce that he might not manage something, and then do it anyway. That is a lesson he will not get from a finished shelf.

You have permission to attempt something in front of the people who love you and let it be visible, and one honest sentence has never once been able to lower a man in his own house. It is written in Galatians that the question is whose approval is steering, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that hallway with you.
