I Blamed The Tool Then Me

Ten minutes. That is how long it took.

The first two were the tool. It is the wrong kind. The head is worn. Whoever designed this was not thinking about a person doing it in a real kitchen.

The next four were the instructions. Which skipped a step. Which assumed something. Which were written by somebody who has never once been a beginner.

And then, somewhere around minute seven, all of that quietly evaporated, and what was left was: I am not able to do things like this.

And you have been living in that sentence for a month.

Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw. And ten minutes in a kitchen is not a court, and nothing said in there is a finding, and I am going to spend this article showing you the difference.

There is therefore now no condemnation

There is a sentence at the start of Romans 8 that is one of the plainest things in the whole Bible.

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1, King James Version)

Condemnation is a legal word. It is the sentence a court passes after a finding of guilt. It is not a feeling and it is not an opinion.

And the verse says there is none. Not that it is reduced. Not that it can be appealed. That there is none, and the word now is sitting right in the middle of it.

You are living under a verdict that Scripture says does not exist, and a sentence you passed on yourself in a kitchen has never once been the one on the record. Romans 8:1 puts the word now in the sentence deliberately, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that read as a legal fact rather than as a comforting idea.

And notice who is speaking. Not you, in a bad ten minutes, with a worn tool in your hand. The court itself, which is the only voice in the room with the standing to say anything.

You have been sentenced by somebody with no authority to do it, and a bad afternoon has never once had jurisdiction over a person. The Spirit of God is the one who tells a person which voice is the court and which one is just noise, and it is written in Romans that the condemnation is not reduced but absent.

The first two explanations were correct

Here is what I want you to notice about those ten minutes, and it is going to sound strange.

The tool probably was wrong. The instructions probably did skip a step. Those were not excuses. They were accurate observations, and you abandoned them.

That is the interesting part. A person who genuinely wanted to avoid blame would have stopped at minute two and stayed there. You did the opposite. You moved through two accurate external explanations and discarded them in favor of one that was about you.

That is not laziness and it is not self pity. That is a person who has a settled belief about themselves and reaches for it whenever there is a gap.

You have been discarding true explanations in favor of one about yourself, and reaching for that sentence has never once meant it was the accurate one. It is written in Romans 8:1 that there is now no condemnation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can interrupt a belief that has been running underneath a person for years.

And here is the practical damage. When the verdict is I am not able to do things like this, nothing is learnable, because there is nothing specific in it. A worn tool teaches you something. A skipped instruction teaches you something. A statement about your whole character teaches you nothing at all and stops the process dead.

Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Sometimes the honest answer is that the job needed somebody else, and that is a fact rather than a verdict. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly, and let that be information and not evidence.

You are entirely right to conclude that a job needed somebody licensed, and a factual conclusion has never once been the same as a sentence about a person. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person clarity between the two, and Scripture says there is now no condemnation rather than a smaller amount of it.

Three things, and stop at three

So here is the ask, and the stopping is the important half.

Write down the three things that actually went wrong, and stop before you write a fourth.

Three specific mechanical facts. The head of the screwdriver was too small for that screw. The instructions did not say which way round the bracket went. The wall was not what I thought it was.

You are able to write three specific facts about an afternoon, and a short list of mechanical causes has never once been an excuse dressed up as an explanation. The Spirit of God is the one who keeps a person's attention on what can actually be learned, and Romans 8:1 puts the condemnation at none rather than at a manageable level.

And then stop. Do not write a fourth, because the fourth one is always the one about you. It arrives in a slightly different voice and it does not have a mechanism in it, and that is how you can recognize it.

Three is chosen because almost every failed job has about three real causes. Write them and you have a list you can do something with. Write the fourth and you have a verdict, and verdicts are where learning ends.

You have permission to keep a list that contains only causes, and refusing to add a line about your character has never once been a way of avoiding responsibility. It is written in Romans that there is therefore now no condemnation, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that kitchen with you.
