Your son watched you look at that door for about four seconds and then walk away.
He did not say anything. He is nine. He was not judging you, and he will not remember the moment, and if you asked him about it tomorrow he would have no idea what you meant.
He will remember the pattern, though. Nobody remembers individual Tuesdays. Everybody remembers what usually happened.
And what usually happens in that house, right now, is that a man meets something he cannot do and finds a reason to be somewhere else.
That is the thing being handed on. Not the skill, because there is no skill to hand on. The response. And the response is being taught extremely well, without one word being said, four seconds at a time.
Let me put this down before anything else. Not knowing how is not a character flaw, and this is not the paragraph where I tell you that you are failing your children. What is being handed on is the ordinary thing that gets handed on in most houses, and it is only worth mentioning at all because it can be changed tonight.

Shewing to the generation to come
There is a line in Psalm 78 about what gets passed down, and the verb in it is the useful part.
Shewing to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. (Psalm 78:4, King James Version)
Shewing. Not telling, and not explaining. Showing, which is a word about what a child sees rather than what they are told.
That psalm is about the works of God being passed to the next generation, and the method God names for it is demonstration. Somebody watches somebody else, and the watching is the transfer.
You have a Bible that puts the passing on in what a child sees rather than in what they are told, and being watched has never once meant you have to already be good at something. Psalm 78:4 chooses a showing word on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that land as an opportunity rather than as pressure.
And notice what the psalm asks to be shown. Not the achievements of the fathers. The works of God, which is to say something bigger than the man doing the showing.
You are not being asked to demonstrate competence, and a father with nothing to show off has never once been disqualified from showing his children anything. The Spirit of God is the one who takes the performance out of being watched, and it is written in Psalm 78 that what gets shown is God's doing rather than the parent's.
The lesson is the response, not the result
Here is what your children are actually learning, and it is worth being precise about.
They are not learning how a hinge works. They will not remember whether the door got fixed. In twenty years none of them could tell you a single job you did in this house.
What they are building is a model of what a grown up does when they meet something they cannot do. That model gets built out of hundreds of small observations, and it is almost entirely non verbal, and it will run in them for the whole of their lives.
You have been teaching a response rather than a skill, and a model built out of small moments has never once required a single one of those moments to go well. It is written in Psalm 78:4 that the passing on happens by showing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who can change what a household is learning in a single evening.
And here is the good news buried in that. If the lesson is the response and not the result, then you do not need to be able to do the job in order to teach them something excellent. You only need to meet it in front of them differently.
A man who says I do not know how this works, looks it up, tries it, gets it wrong, says so, and tries again has just taught his children more than a man who silently fixes everything.
Now the limit, and I say it here rather than in a footer. Say this part in front of them too. Never a gas appliance, never the breaker panel, never mains wiring, never a wall holding the building up, never a roof. Call a licensed professional and pay them properly, out loud, where your children can hear you decide it.
You are teaching them something excellent when you refuse a job in front of them, and naming a limit where a child can hear it has never once looked like weakness to that child. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives a man peace about that, and Scripture puts the showing rather than the succeeding at the center of what gets handed down.
Do it in front of them and narrate it
So here is the ask, and the children stay in the room by design.
Do one job in front of your children and say the true things out loud as they happen.
All of them. The not knowing. The looking up. The first attempt. The part where it does not fit. The bit where you have to take it off and start again.
You are able to work in front of your own children and narrate it honestly, and one evening of true sentences has never once cost a man an ounce of what his children think of him. The Spirit of God is the one who removes the performance from a father's hands, and Psalm 78:4 puts the passing on in what a generation is shown.
Say the sentences plainly and at normal volume. I do not know how this comes off. I am going to look it up. That did not work. I am going to try the other way. There we go.
Every one of those is a piece of the model, and every one of them is different from the four seconds and the walking away.
And here is the part that will surprise you. They will come over. Children are drawn to an adult who is visibly working something out, far more than to an adult who is quietly competent, because the working out is the interesting part.
You have permission to be watched not knowing, and a father visibly learning has never once been a smaller sight to a child than a father who never gets anything wrong. It is written in Psalm 78 that the works are shown to the generation coming, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is standing in that room with you.
So here is what I believe is being said over a man standing in his own kitchen tonight.
You have been handing something on without meaning to, and one evening of doing it differently has never once been too late to change what gets passed down. I am not telling you that you have failed them and I am not handing you a verdict on anything. Psalm 78:4 puts the passing on in the showing, which means it happens whether a man plans it or not, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who is standing there with you.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have one evening and a handful of true sentences available tonight, and a whole generation of silence has never once been stronger than a father saying I do not know in front of his own children. The written word makes the showing the method, and the Spirit of God is the one who is going to be there when they come over.
One job. They stay. Say everything.
Declare this over yourself
- Four seconds where I looked at it and walked away, you were being watched and you were never once the only thing I can show them. Psalm 78:4 says shewing to the generation to come, so by the Holy Spirit I do one job in front of them tonight, in the name of Jesus.
- Silence I inherited and started handing on, you have no claim on a man sitting on a kitchen floor with a drawer. The written word makes the showing the method rather than the telling, and by the Spirit of God I am done teaching a response I never chose.
- Father, You said the works are shown to the generation to come, and Your word puts the passing on in what a child sees. So by Your Spirit I say the true things out loud in front of my sons tonight, and I let them watch the whole of it.
